Over the past two years, joint investigations by our team at Local Call and colleagues at +972 Magazine and The Guardian revealed how Israel’s military surveillance agency, Unit 8200, relied extensively on Microsoft customized products for the mass surveillance of Palestinian civilians throughout Gaza and the West Bank. Last fall, a grassroots campaign by partially powered by our findinds forced the tech giant to revoke Unit 8200's access to its cloud services.

Now, Israeli media reports that Microsoft Israel’s general manager and other local managers are stepping down, amid concerns within company headquarters that some of its Israel-based employees may not have been transparent about the army's use of its services.

The inquiry came after the Guardian revealed Israel used company technology to support mass surveillance of Palestinian phone calls

“The U.S. government owes the public — and Shireen Abu Akleh’s family — more than words of regret. Without accountability, Israeli forces will continue to take journalists’ lives — because they know they can do so without consequence.”

-- Jodie Ginsberg, CEO, Committee to Protect Journalists.

Four years ago today, the Israeli army killed Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh and escaped accountability. In the years since the army has killed hundreds of other journalists and media workers, including over 200 Palestinian journalists in Gaza.

Five years ago, "Boycott" premiered with a simple yet urgent question: What happens when the government tries to legislate away our right to protest? Since then, anti-boycott laws—once primarily targeting Palestine advocacy—have become a blueprint for broader anti-democratic legislation across the United States, restricting protest, dissent, and civic participation on issues ranging from environmental justice and Indigenous sovereignty to racial justice, gun violence prevention, and LGBTQ+ rights.

But today, a growing repeal movement is gaining momentum. Lawmakers and grassroots coalitions across the country—including in Wisconsin, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Texas, Colorado, Utah, Illinois, and Arizona—are working to overturn anti-boycott laws that punish individuals and businesses for engaging in peaceful political expression, reflecting a widening recognition that such laws threaten core First Amendment protections.

Please join us for a special, virtual screening of "Boycott," followed by a discussion on Wednesday, May 13, at 2:00 pm ET / 9:00 pm Jerusalem time that reunites protagonists from the film alongside civil rights attorneys and organizers to examine what this moment reveals about the evolving landscape of protest rights in the United States.

This conversation will be moderated by Daniel Nerenberg, Education and Communications Specialist, Just Vision, and feature the following speakers:

- Alan Leveritt, Publisher of the Arkansas Times and "Boycott" protagonist
- Bahia Amawi, Palestinian-American speech therapist and "Boycott" protagonist
- Brian Hauss, Deputy Director of the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, also featured in "Boycott"
- Janan Najeeb, Founder and Executive Director of the Muslim Women’s Coalition and Founder of the Wisconsin Coalition for Justice in Palestine, which is working to repeal Wisconsin’s anti-boycott law

A new investigation by +972 Magazine, .co.il, and The Nation demonstrates how new outposts are pushing further and further into the West Bank, advancing Israeli government policy to displace Palestinians and consolidate Israeli control over ever-greater swaths of the occupied territory. This strategy aligns with the “Sovereignty Plan” put forward last September by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, which envisions annexing the entire West Bank except for six disconnected Palestinian enclaves.

This investigation narrows in on a dozen Palestinian communities in the central West Bank — between Ramallah and Nablus — that have found themselves on the front lines of the settler expansion into 'Area B' of the West Bank.

Amid the collapse of official documentation systems following Israel’s genocidal war, no single institution can authoritatively say how many people are missing in Gaza. For the loved ones of the missing, this state of mass irresolution can amount to a lived experience of profound, frenetic, risky restlessness, writes Mahmoud Mushtaha.

Last year, an investigation by שיחה מקומית, +972 Magazine and the Guardian showed that Microsoft’s servers were used to store masses of Israeli intelligence on Palestinian civilians in the West Bank and Gaza, which the Israeli army used to plan deadly airstrikes and arrests.

The revelations led Microsoft to revoke its cloud services from Unit 8200, Israel’s elite signals intelligence unit that had collected the surveillance data — the first known instance of a tech giant restricting Israel’s access to its services.

“We do not provide technology to facilitate mass surveillance of civilians,” Brad Smith, Microsoft’s vice chair and president, said in September after the company terminated Unit 8200’s access to Azure. “We have applied this principle in every country around the world.”

But new leaked documents raise questions about whether Microsoft technology is facilitating ICE's immigration crackdown in the US. See link in comments for the new investigation.
