Ameinu welcomes the US-brokered ceasefire deal reached between Israel and Lebanon. "The arrangement between Israel and the government of Lebanon is an important step toward reducing tensions throughout the Middle East and proves once again that the best way for Israel to achieve security and safety for its citizens ultimately requires diplomacy," said Ameinu President Kenneth Bob. "The chimera of 'total victory' that Prime Minister Netanyahu and some of his ultra right-wing coalition partners have been espousing since the war with Hamas started is a recipe for unending war and death for Israelis, Palestinians, Lebanese, and others in the region."

Ameinu also calls upon the government of Israel to take the initiative towards ending the hostilities in Gaza. "With the announcement of this ceasefire and the cessation of armed combat on the northern front," Bob continued, "it is our profound hope that the government of Israel will focus its full attention on a negotiated end of hostilities in Gaza linked to a swift return of all of the hostages."

The Other Israel Film Festival presents cinema that inspires conversation and takes an in-depth look into Israeli and Palestinian societies. The festival explores human stories and social issues.The festival presents dramatic and documentary films, as well as panels and events exploring the relationship between history, culture, and identity. With partner organizations, the festival aims to engage the community, deepen views, challenge perspectives, and drive communities to action.

It has been a dark and ominous week for progressive Jews in America and in Israel, between the re-election of Donald Trump at home and the firing of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in Israel. Ameinu fears for the erosion of democracy and the threat to women, minorities, migrants, and other groups that may be marginalized and targeted during a second Trump presidency. Likewise, Ameinu condemns the cynical firing of Gallant while the attention of the world was focused on the American election. Once again, Prime Minister Netanyahu has put his own interests ahead of Israel’s. Netanyahu’s actions signal not an end to hostilities and the desire to bring the remaining Israeli captives home, but the continuation of an endless war that no longer has any real objectives other than keeping himself in power and to avoid a reckoning for his government’s abject failure on October 7, 2023. His unholy alliance with fanatical extremists and draft dodging ultra-orthodox entities demands widespread repudiation by the international Jewish community. Ameinu stands in solidarity with the people of Israel who are protesting against the Netanyahu government.

As we face an uncertain future, it is easy to despair, but Ameinu finds strength in the resiliency of the Jewish people and in the justness of our cause. “Ameinu remains committed to fighting for democracy in America, Israel, and around the world. Our values of justice, equality before the law, and peace are unwavering and we will continue to stand firm, and remain true to our beliefs,” said Kenneth Bob, President of Ameinu.

Ameinu stands in solidarity with our friends, family and with all of the people of Israel as the entire country came under a ballistic missile attack from Iran. We condemn this unprecedented escalation of violence and call on all of the parties to take active measures to reduce the tensions in the Middle East.

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, Ameinu remains steadfast in its hope that the coming year will be one where Israelis, Palestinians, and all peoples of the region recognize that the only way to a brighter future is through a cessation of hostilities and not through war and bloodshed.

Ameinu is co-sponsoring a rally on Sunday (tomorrow) in San Francisco calling on the Israeli government "seal the deal" which will bring the hostages home and end the war. We hope our SF Bay Area members and supporters will attend.
