The U.S. just hit a record $40 trillion in debt. Meanwhile, Congress keeps waiting until the last minute to pass spending bills, relying on short-term fixes instead of doing the job on time. It's time for term limits.

Leadership in Congress runs on seniority, not merit. New members often need over a decade in office just to gain real influence, and by then, many have lost touch with why they ran in the first place. Plenty of skilled people see that math and decide not to run at all. Term limits take the focus off tenure and put it back on merit.

Does Congress need that change?

Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Lessig explains exactly how major constitutional change has actually happened in American history, and why the same strategy can work for term limits.

"If you look at the most important amendments in American history, three of them were proposed because we had a civil war. Nobody wants a civil war today. But every one of the other important amendments, including the Bill of Rights as well as the amendments that made senators elected by the people, all of those amendments came because there was an Article V convention movement that got states around the country to say, 'We want a convention.' And when Congress saw the number of states calling for a convention was getting close to the number necessary to convene one, Congress was terrified. So Congress proposed the amendments the convention calls were demanding. That's the strategy we need today, and the convention movements have been central to that transformation."
—Prof. Larry Lessig, Harvard University

The longer politicians stay in office, the easier it is to lose touch with what their constituents actually face day to day and why they originally ran to fix. Term limits keep politicians grounded in the realities of where they came from and allow more skilled professionals, small business owners, veterans, and doctors a real chance to take office restoring a citizen legislature.

Lots of people say term limits would mean losing valuable institutional knowledge. But new members of Congress rarely start from zero. Half of U.S. House members already served as state legislators, and 80% held some kind of prior political office before ever reaching Congress, according to the New York Times. The knowledge was never really the issue, it's the reluctance to admit when something isn't working. That's what keeps Congress members defending their old decisions instead of actually solving problems. Term limits don't erase experience, they create room for fresh perspectives. Term limits wouldn't fix all of America's problems but saying we would just be removing experience, that has not produced results just keeps Congress stagnant. 83% of Americans want term limits for Congress it is time for change.

Some of the same members have been in Congress long enough to see every missed budget deadline since 1996, and nothing has ever forced a change. Term limits create the urgency and accountability that's been missing.
