We need our state to pass an application to propose an amendment to term limit Congress.

In 2016, John Ryan, now mayor of Alsip, helped lead the push for a three term limit. More than 80% of voters approved it.

Now, with Ryan serving his third term as mayor, voters are being asked whether that limit should be extended to four terms. If it passes, he could run again.

It's a local example of why limits on time in office matter. We believe the same applies to Congress.

But when there is no limit on terms, the perks and privileges of Washington can become part of the routine, and some lawmakers retire in spirit long before they retire from office. Term limits help keep service temporary and accountable.

The longer lawmakers stay in Washington, the more time special interests have to build relationships and influence around them. And those relationships can become valuable to lawmakers too, expanding the networks and access that come with years in office. Congressional term limits would bring regular turnover and make entrenched influence harder to build on both sides.

When 19-year-old Gregory Watson wrote a college term paper arguing that a forgotten 1789 amendment could still be ratified, his professor gave him a "C" and told him it was impossible.

He didn't listen.

Long before social media or the internet, Watson launched a relentless, self-funded campaign. Over 200 years after James Madison introduced it, the measure crossed the finish line to become the 27th Amendment.

His school many years later changed his grade from a C to an A.

Thomas Jefferson proposed regular rotation in Congress in 1776 because he understood the danger of staying in office too long.
