Kick off the new school year with a morning of free family fun at Ready, Set, Safe! Back-to-School Family Day on Saturday, August 29, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Eastern Market Metro Plaza.

This free community event will bring together children, families, first responders, and neighborhood partners for an exciting celebration focused on safety, connection, and community pride. Meet local officers with the MPD and FEMS Touch-a-Truck featuring police and fire vehicles and hands-on activities, while also enjoying face painting, live music, and interactive activities as you prepare for a safe and successful school year.

Children ages 5–18 can also take home a free backpack filled with school supplies, while supplies last. Backpacks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and children must be present to receive one.

This free family event will feature music, local first responders, and more as we celebrate the start of the school year!

Earlier this week, the Capitol Hill BID welcomed Ward 7 Councilmember Wendell Felder, Chair of the Subcommittee on Local Business Development, for a visit to the neighborhood.

During the tour, Councilmember Felder learned more about the BID's work and upcoming initiatives while meeting with local small business owners to hear firsthand about their successes, challenges, and priorities. Thank you, Councilmember Felder, for taking the time to visit and support Capitol Hill's small business community.

Just when we were close to pulling the plug on the Capitol Hill 4th of July Parade because of the heat forecast, things started falling into place in a way that made us say, “Let’s go for it!”

With the National Parade cancelled, high school marching bands from across the country suddenly found themselves in Washington, D.C. with all the patriotism, talent, and excitement they had worked so hard for — but no parade to march in.

Somehow, four groups found their way to us, hoping for a place to perform. We were so happy to welcome them into our Capitol Hill parade.

They came from Utah, Nebraska, and this wonderful group The Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Marching Saints from rural Minnesota bringing music, energy, and so much joy to 8th Street.

Sometimes, you just have to go for it. And sometimes, it turns into something truly special.

Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen.
