Washington International Competition

Washington International Competition WIC is a prestigious international competition held yearly in Washington, DC, for singers, pianists and strings in a three year rotation.

The Washington International Competition (WIC), established in 1950, is held for singers, pianists, string players, and composers. WIC competitions for singers, pianists, and string players are held each spring in annual rotation. The WIC composers’ competition, established in 1976, is held every 3 years for the composition of a string quartet, piano quartet, piano quintet, piano trio, or string t

rio. Through the authority of its judges, high musical standards, and the quality of young artists attracted, the WIC offers—both in the United States and abroad—a significant opportunity for young artists to step upward from the ranks of talented students to recognition as professionals. Winners of these competitions have gone on to win other important contests and achieve distinction on concert and opera stages. Winners receive substantial cash awards and the opportunity to perform in recital or as soloist with orchestras in prestigious Washington venues. Applicants for performance competitions are first auditioned from MP3 recordings submitted electronically to our online application site. Those accepted as semifinalists are invited to come to Washington, DC, to compete before a panel of judges composed of outstanding performers, distinguished teachers, and others of recognized stature in various music fields. The semifinals and finals are open to the public free of charge—a great opportunity to hear promising young artists in a varied program. Applicants for the composition competition submit musical scores electronically to our online application site. The winning composition is publicly performed by professional musicians during the WIC finals.

We are honored to welcome GRAMMY® Award-winning tenor Nicholas Phan as a judge for the 2026 Washington International Competition for Voice.

Praised by The Boston Globe as “one of the world’s most remarkable singers,” Nicholas Phan has earned international recognition for his expressive artistry, thoughtful musicianship, and versatility across a repertoire spanning nearly 500 years. In addition to his acclaimed performance career, he is widely respected as a curator, educator, and advocate for vocal music, known for creating programs that explore identity, elevate underrepresented voices, and connect historical works to contemporary conversations.

Phan is the co-founder and artistic director of Art Song Chicago, now celebrating its 15th anniversary, and the creator of BACH 52, a digital series examining the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. His work as a performer and curator has led to collaborations with major institutions including the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Wigmore Hall, San Francisco Opera, and the Kennedy Center.

A 2025 GRAMMY® Award winner for Best Opera Recording, Phan has also received multiple GRAMMY® nominations for his solo recordings and became the first singer of Asian descent ever nominated in the history of the Best Classical Solo Vocal Album category. We take a brief pause in our excitement about next weekend to say congratulations to 2016 WIC winner Maggie Finnegan, lauded here for her "heavenly, pure and precise voice" in this excellent review of the first recording of Dominick Argento's "Voyage of Edgar Allan Poe"!

Dominick Argento’s adventurous 1975 operatic transit through the psyche of Edgar Allan Poe proves to be both delightful and disturbing.

We are honored to welcome GRAMMY® Award-winning soprano Karen Slack as a judge for the 2026 Washington International Competition Voice Competition.

Praised by The Washington Post as “one of opera’s strongest voices at present — both as a singer and a shaper of its culture,” Karen Slack is one of today’s most compelling artistic voices. In addition to performances with many of the world’s leading opera companies and orchestras, she is widely recognized for her visionary advocacy, groundbreaking programming, and commitment to expanding the art form through new and historically significant works.

Her 2025 GRAMMY® Award-winning album “Beyond the Years: Unpublished Songs of Florence Price” marked a historic moment for classical music marking the first time an album dedicated to the work of a Black composer received the award.

In addition to her celebrated performance career, Slack serves as an artistic advisor, educator, curator, and champion for the next generation of artists. We are thrilled to have her insight, artistry, and experience guiding this year’s competition. For more information, please visit www.sopranokarenslack.com
