UN Women is the women's fund at the United Nations that provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programmes and strategies to foster women's empowerment and gender equality. Placing the advancement of women's human rights at the center of all of its efforts, UN Women focuses its activities on four strategic areas:
(1) Reducing feminized poverty,
(2) Ending violence against wome
n,
(3) Reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS among women and girls, and
(4) Achieving gender equality in democratic governance in times of peace as well as war. Created in 1976 as an innovative and catalytic fund, UN Women promotes women’s empowerment, rights and gender equality globally through 15 sub-regional and two national offices that support programmes within and among individual countries. One of 17 National Committees worldwide, the United States Committee for UN Women was chartered in 1983 to expand support within the United States for UN Women's mission through local chapters and an Advisory Council of national leaders. Supports UN Women's projects that promote women's economic empowerment, leadership and the elimination of violence against women and girls.

3. Promotes events and campaigns that educate the public about human rights issues affecting all women.
4. Raises funds for UN Women through public events and private contributions.
5. Alerts members about issues of critical concern for the advancement of women and possibilities for action.
