Counselor Fined for Refusing to Affirm Same-Sex Relationships During Counseling Session...

Nathan Loyd, staff counsel at the Thomas More Society and a former active-duty member of the Air Force, joined Frank DeVito this week to discuss a recent settlement with the US Coast Guard that will protect the religious freedom of servicemembers across the country.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Coast Guard refused to provide religious exemptions from vaccine mandates. Elite servicemembers were denied promotion and cut out of key responsibilities for their religious objections to the mandate. A Class of officers and enlisted coast guardsmen, with the help of attorneys from the Thomas More Society, recently settled a major lawsuit with the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard agreed to follow federal regulations that protect religious liberty in the future.

Few people wake up and think, “Today, I’m going to file a lawsuit.”

Filing a lawsuit is usually seen as a “last resort” to put to rest some quarrel that has persisted for some time. This toolkit aims to provide a general overview of civil litigation accessible to a layperson so that, if the “last resort” situation materializes, the reader feels more prepared for what lies ahead.

And even if the need for litigation never arises, a general understanding of civil litigation increases appreciation for the legal system, which is an important foundation of civic education.
