Lighting up National Chemistry Week with Ms. Simms’s class!

Our scholars put their scientific minds to work in a hands-on experiment using salt, magnets, and boiling water to generate real energy and power a light bulb! From testing hypotheses to seeing energy transfer in action, Ms. Simms makes science interactive, challenging, and fun. At our Young Adult Learning Center, the Cosmetology class is learning so much more than techniques-they’re learning that hair is living art. Under the guidance of their hands-on instructor, our scholars are mastering the craft while connecting to the rich history behind it.
From the intricate storytelling woven into traditional cornrows to the pioneering legacy of Madam C.J. Walker and the invention of the hot comb and flat iron, every press, braid, and style honors the ancestors who paved the way.
This isn’t just hair. It’s heritage, artistry, and empowerment. Maya is the Difference.

From vibrant cultures and rich traditions to powerful stories and leadership, our Hispanic and Latinx scholars, staff, and families make our community stronger, brighter, and more inclusive every single day.

We recently spoke with Mr. Serrano, our high school Spanish teacher, who highlighted why learning Spanish is so transformative for our scholars. Mastering the language goes far beyond the classroom—it connects us to our daily lives, deepens cultural appreciation, and opens doors to exciting career paths! 📚💼
