🎉 We’re celebrating the introduction of the Michigan Competitive Fuels Act in the Michigan Senate this week! Thank you to Sam Singh for introducing this important legislation and to Clean Fuels Michigan for bringing together a broad coalition of businesses and organizations in support of it.

This is an important step toward lowering carbon emissions and creating a competitive market for fuels in Michigan. The legislation proposes a market-based approach that gives lower-carbon fuels a place to compete.

For biogas, that means new opportunities to turn organic waste from farms, food processing plants, landfills and wastewater plants into renewable natural gas (RNG) for transportation. The policy could also create new opportunities for biogas-generated electricity used to power EVs.

Michigan has enormous potential to produce energy from waste, and this legislation would help put those resources to work while giving consumers and fleets more fuel choices.

We’re proud to be part of the coalition supporting the Michigan Competitive Fuels Act—and excited to see Michigan join the growing momentum behind state clean fuels policies!

We're at Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA)’s this week in St. Louis, and we’re proud to have both our Executive Director Patrick Serfass and our Board Chair Randy Beck on panels, which included leaders from ABC members Guild Associates, Inc, Evonik, Morrow Energy, Waga Energy, Viridi RNG, WM, Guild Associates, Inc, and Weaver.

Patrick led the session "From Landfill Gas to RNG—Understanding the Technologies, Markets, and Pathways to Value," with Tyler A. Russell, Tanguy Largeau, Erik Hoving, and Peter Smith, PE for a practical look at the technologies and markets shaping landfill-gas-to-RNG projects.

Randy joined David Penoyer, Peter Carrico, Matt Stutz and Edward Vogel, with Corina Sheridan moderating "Landfill Gas Leaders: Lessons, Evolution & Innovation"—a conversation about the experience, lessons and opportunities shaping the future of landfill gas management.

According to the American Biogas Council’s new 2026 report, scaling anaerobic digestion to all 5,000 viable U.S. plants could:

Many plants are already doing more than cleaning —they’re turning organic into . But there’s an opportunity to do much more!

Our new report provides the first comprehensive look in more than a decade at how U.S. wastewater facilities are capturing biogas and using it to produce energy.

1,213 facilities are already doing capturing biogas to create renewable energy -- 100.8 billion cubic feet of biogas annually, with potential for another 70 billion cubic feet.

And there’s another opportunity: 139 facilities currently accept outside organic waste, including food waste, fats, oils and grease. That means existing wastewater digesters could be used to put much more food waste to productive use.

💧 Biogas from wastewater has room to grow.

Wastewater treatment plants (WTTPs) are already capturing biogas—but the opportunity is much bigger.

If all 5,000 U.S. WTTPs with viable average daily flow converted their sludge into renewable energy, annual biogas capture could reach an estimated 172 billion cubic feet (Bcf).

That’s enough energy to generate electricity for approximately 1.9 million U.S. households every year. 🇺🇸⚡

Beyond energy production, expanding biogas capture can help wastewater facilities reduce energy and heating costs, cut methane emissions, and turn a waste stream into a valuable renewable resource.

It's and our very own Alycia Tolman is there on behalf of ABC members, connecting with leaders across energy, climate, finance and industry and promoting the role of biogas as a practical solution to meet climate goals.

At The Nest Campus, conversations ranged from meeting growing energy demand from data centers, to permitting reform and the need to make energy solutions more affordable. Speakers included Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Generate Capital CEO David Crane and Patagonia CEO Ryan Gellert.

We’re also meeting with policymakers and industry leaders focused on energy affordability and participating in discussions about how we measure and account for the real-world impacts of climate solutions. Today, we’re joining the Molecule Group Impact Accounting Workshop, bringing together leaders from across sustainable fuels and energy to discuss life-cycle accounting and market-based procurement.

♻️ Turning waste into 100% renewable energy is how we build more resilient communities.

The Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority (VVWRA) in California is showing what’s possible when wastewater facilities become environmental and energy hubs.

Through its partnership with Anaergia to create SoCal Biomethane, VVWRA is converting wastewater solids and food-processing waste into renewable energy.

The community benefits are significant:
🌱 Cleaner air: Reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 72,000 tons annually.

♻️ Waste becomes value: Keeps 280,000 tons of waste out of disposal pathways each year while capturing its energy for onsite and community use.

💧 Wastewater treatment plants are doing more than treating water—they’re producing renewable energy.

U.S. wastewater treatment facilities capture nearly 100 billion cubic feet of biogas each year—and that resource is being put to work in several ways.
⚡ 65% is used for electricity/cogeneration
