🚜♻️ What happens when dairy manure and food waste are recycled? Clean energy, nutrient-rich fertilizer, new farm revenue, and stronger rural communities.

That’s exactly what VanguardRenewables is helping deliver with a new anaerobic digestion and organics recycling facility in Litchfield, Minnesota. Once operational, the project will convert cow manure and food and beverage waste into renewable natural gas (RNG) and nutrient-rich fertilizer.

Developed in partnership with Wagner Dairy, TotalEnergies, and CenterPoint Energy, the facility is expected to produce approximately 270,000 MMBtu of RNG annually—enough energy to serve about 5,300 homes—while creating local jobs, supporting farmers, and putting valuable organic materials to good use.

Projects like this demonstrate how biogas systems can connect waste diversion, renewable energy production, and regenerative agriculture to deliver economic and environmental benefits for rural communities.

It’s National Dairy Month, when America celebrates dairy farmers and all the delicious, nutritious foods made from milk. But what many people don’t realize is that a growing number of dairy farms aren't just making milk, they're also producing renewable energy!

Our new data released today shows that 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟬, as farms continue investing in systems that convert dairy cow manure into renewable natural gas (RNG) and electricity.

Across the country, almost 𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀 now include these systems, capturing methane from manure and turning it into usable energy. That's:

⚡ Enough energy to power ~680,000 U.S. homes
🐮 Manure from ~2.5 million cows put to beneficial use
🌎 Emissions reductions equivalent to ~5.9 million cars

Beyond energy production, these systems also generate nutrient-rich fertilizer, reduce farm odors, and return nutrients to America’s farmland soil.

But America has barely tapped the full potential of this energy source. Only a fraction of the potential dairy biogas systems in the U.S. have been built.

📣 Today we announced that our longtime Board Chair Bernie Sheff, P.E., of Burns & McDonnell has officially passed his gavel to Randy Beck, Senior Director of Renewable Energy at WM.

Throughout his 15 years of service to ABC, including 12 years as Board Chair, Bernie has helped guide the organization through a period of tremendous growth for the U.S. biogas industry. His leadership helped strengthen ABC's role as the voice of the industry and supported the development of new policies, market opportunities, educational programs--including our renowned Operator School--and other industry resources.

We thank Bernie for his extraordinary dedication and service, and we now welcome Randy as he begins his term as Board Chair. With more than 35 years of renewable energy experience and a track record of developing and operating biogas and RNG projects, Randy brings valuable expertise to ABC's continued efforts to advance biogas development across the United States.

A powerful partnership is helping dairy farms in Vermont turn organic waste into high-quality renewable natural gas.

Mayekawa USA Inc. and UGS - Unconventional Gas Solutions have successfully completed and delivered a new biogas upgrading system for Novilla RNG at its Bellevue RNG facility in northern Vermont.

This marks the seventh upgrading system that Mayekawa USA and UGS have delivered to Novilla over the past three years—a strong testament to the value of trusted partnerships and proven technology.

Using UGS upgrading systems powered by MYCOM two-stage compressors, Novilla processes raw directly from dairy digesters. This innovative approach eliminates the need for costly pretreatment and helps save an estimated $500,000 to $600,000 annually in hydrogen sulfide removal costs.

“What's really great about the MYCOM compressor is that we're able to put raw biogas in there,” said Mark Hill, co-CEO of Novilla RNG.

The newest facility in Berkshire, Vermont will:
✅ Convert dairy manure into pipeline-quality RNG
✅ Reduce imported fossil natural gas by 110,000 MMBtu annually
✅ Deliver greater than 99% expected uptime
✅ Significantly lower operating costs

🚜⚡ A major step forward for renewable energy in Pennsylvania!

Ag-GridEnergy LLC’s first dairy farm digester project in the state, Walmoore Ag-Grid, is moving into active development thanks to a $4 million RISE PA grant announced by Gov. Shapiro’s Administration.

Located at Walmoore Holsteins Inc. in Chester County, PA, the project will use cow manure and food waste to generate 1 MW of renewable baseload electricity 24/7 for on-farm use and export to the Pennsylvania power grid.

When operational in Q4 2027, the project will:
✅ Recycle 65,000+ gallons of manure per day
✅ Process 20,000+ gallons of food waste per day
✅ Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 75%
✅ Create jobs and strengthen Pennsylvania’s energy infrastructure

“This grant allows us to expedite development and demonstrate how anaerobic co-digestion on dairy farms can deliver significant environmental and economic benefits,” said Rashi Akki, CEO of Ag-Grid Energy.

Walmoore Holsteins owner Walt Moore adds that projects like this will help create jobs, support the Commonwealth’s economy, and help keep electric rates in check.

Exciting news from two ABC members, Ameresco and HASI: They’re spinning off Ameresco’s biofuels business to form a new joint venture called Neogenyx Fuels that will focus on accelerating growth in advanced biofuels and renewable natural gas (RNG) infrastructure! The deal represents a $1.8 billion enterprise value and includes a $400 million capital commitment from HASI to support future growth.
The key takeaway? These forward-looking companies see the value and long-term growth potential of biogas, RNG, and advanced biofuels as low-carbon energy solutions for transportation, industry, maritime and more -- and they're putting big money behind it.
Neogenyx Fuels will be one of the largest developers of biogas projects in the U.S., backed by Ameresco’s 25-year track record in project development and operations and HASI’s sustainable infrastructure investment platform.

News: Hawaii just took a major step toward cleaner, more resilient transportation by passing clean fuel legislation yesterday!

Once signed into law, the clean fuel standard will expand markets for low-carbon fuels -- like renewable natural gas (RNG) and biogas-generated electricity for EVs.

Biogas projects make RNG and electricity by capturing the energy from organic waste -- such as food waste, manure, and wastewater solids – as it breaks down naturally. RNG and electricity generated from biogas for vehicles consistently earn some of the highest-value credits in clean fuel programs like Hawaii’s because they reduce carbon emissions the most compared to other vehicle fuels.

Clean fuel standard programs are a market-based solution to cut transportation emissions, and they have the added benefits of creating local jobs and strengthening energy resilience.

Across the U.S., transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions --28% to 29% of the total. Clean fuel standards are a highly effective solution, and and we hope to see more states adopt them.
