Washington Urban Debate League - WUDL

Washington Urban Debate League - WUDL Fast growing local non-profit supporting debate excellence across Greater Washington, NAUDL Affiliate Our program works, and is wildly popular. area.

The Washington Urban Debate League, an affiliate of the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues, brings policy debate to underrepresented communities. Over the last three years, we've grow from working with 8 schools to more than 50 across the D.C. A wealth of academic studies confirms the benefits of participation in policy debate, especially for students of color and other traditionally und

er-represented groups. Urban Debate programs seek to level the playing field and provide these benefits to all students. Policy Debate compliments to implementation of Common Core standards, with their focus on research and analytic skills for all students. We provide a robust tournament schedule, free of charge to public school students, (including breakfast and lunch). WUDL also provides debate expertise, professional development, and support to our teacher-coaches.

“I just made sure that he understood what he’s debating about." — Delores, mother of WUDL debater Noah | Immutable (PBS)

Some of us were shaped by a mother. Some by a grandmother who never let us settle for too little. A favorite aunt who told us the truth when no one else would. A mentor who saw our potential before we did.

She believed in you and your voice.

In the documentary Immutable, we see what that belief unlocks. WUDL works every day to be that force for 800+ young people across DMV public schools giving them the tools to think critically, speak boldly, and advocate for themselves.

This Mother’s Day weekend, honor the woman who shaped you. Make a one-time gift or become a recurring monthly donor.

And if you do nothing else this weekend, watch Immutable on PBS. It’ll remind you exactly why this work matters.

Behind every great WUDL debater is a coach who showed up to every practice, every tournament, every moment of doubt.

This season, we are proud to recognize the coaches, principals, and volunteers who made everything possible. One coach attended every day of summer camp to improve her skills. A gap-year alum stepped in for two teams and led students to nationals. A principal managed to host a qualifying tournament with only 24 hours' notice. These are just a few examples of the people who make debate happen.
