Growing hope, without soil? is transforming lunch—and lives—in Kibera, Kenya 🌱💦🥬

🌍💧 At Olympic Secondary School, students are learning about the future of farming firsthand through a hydroponic unit used in their agriculture classes. This hands-on experience introduces them to grow methods while adding nutritious food to their school meals.

Hydroponics, a soil-free farming technique, grows plants in nutrient-rich water solutions. This method uses up to 90% less water and 75% less space 🌿—ideal for urban areas and regions facing water scarcity. 🌧️

🌿🌎 For students, it’s more than fresh vegetables—it’s an introduction to resilient farming practices that benefit both people and the planet.

Each week, vegetables from the hydroponic unit supplement the school’s lunch programme, providing fresh meals to 1,200 students twice a week. 🥕🥦🍅 This project not only improves student nutrition but also connects them to the importance of food, health, and stewardship.

Food is a pathway to peace. At WFP, we believe food security efforts in the communities we serve create opportunities for peace.🌱🤝 By supporting activities that build trust, respect, solidarity & equal opportunity, we help communities thrive together.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of .

🕊️ In that declaration, the United Nations’ most inclusive body recognized that peace “not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation."

The International has always been a time to lay down weapons and observe ceasefires. But it now must also be a time for people to see each other’s humanity. Our survival as a global community depends on that.
