Last week, the ACS CAN Texas team was proud to attend the CPRIT Innovations Conference and connect with the researchers, leaders, and innovators driving progress against cancer here in Texas. The messages on ACS CAN’s HOPE Wall were a powerful reminder of why this work matters.

Last week, our volunteers and staff attended as part of our program! On Thursday, we heard James Talarico speak in a one-on-one session. We wish we’d been able to ask a question but were glad to hear him mention cancer issues during the discussion. On Friday, we attended a panel discussion with Bobby Pulido, during which two of our volunteers asked him questions about important cancer issues. Mr. Pulido, thank you for your commitment to support increasing federal cancer research funding, if elected, and for discussing the importance of access to affordable health care.

On Saturday, we attended a panel with Lizzie Pannill Fletcher, Christian D. Menefee and Pete Sessions. We’re grateful they discussed the importance of cancer research funding in addition to other cancer issues. We also attended a session with Michael McCaul, who is ending 22 years of service in Congress this year. One of our volunteers was given the opportunity to thank Congressman Michael McCaul for his years of dedication to the fight against cancer, and championing federal investments in childhood cancer research.

We invite all candidates running for federal office in Texas to sign the and commit to making cancer a national priority, if elected. For more information about the promise and to see which candidates have signed, please visit www.fightcancer.org/cancer-promise.

ACS CAN joins Texans in mourning the loss of former state Rep. Garnet Coleman, who passed away on Wednesday.

During his more than two decades of service in the Texas House, Coleman was a champion for protecting public health and a driving force behind policies to reduce the cancer burden statewide. In 2007, he played a critical role in developing legislation that led to the creation of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT), and he helped establish the Children’s Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program in Texas which continues to provide free or low-cost healthcare coverage for millions of children across the state.

Former state Rep. Coleman led with compassion and commitment to his community, and we are certain his legacy will continue to impact generations of Texans. ACS CAN sends its deepest condolences to his loved ones at this difficult time.
