Call for Book Chapter Proposals
Book Title: Religion and Power: National and Global Perspectives
Synopsis:
This edited volume explores intersections between "religion" and "power" across a variety of social organizations, including families, national communities, governments, political parties, financial institutions, civil society organizations and cultural movements. We are looking, for book chapters contributions both from law as well as international relations/political science background about any of these aspects of religion, formal or informal, as it pertains to interaction with power. The book proposed will be around 80-100,000 words and we are expecting each chapter to be around 7000 words.
This book comes as a result of two distinct yet causally inter-related processes.
The first is a long-standing discussion on how to structure a comparative representation of Abrahamic religions (or, for that matter, any two religions) to non-specialist audience. The question firstly arose in 2011 in relation to a curriculum of European history and civilization for a cohort of undergraduate students at The University of Hong Kong, yet it quickly proved an issue of almost universal applicability: given the limited amount of time that non-specialized courses dedicate to the topic, how could religions be represented in a fair and balanced way?
The second process that brought to this volume was initiated as a direct consequence of the first, and relates to the experience of setting-up a framework for structured interfaith dialogue in Hong Kong, an exercise in which the editors and some of the contributors have engaged since 2011.
In preparation of the book, the editors and some of the contributors from the IR discipline are participating in a workshop at the University of Hong Kong, coinciding ISA June 2017. We may plan more workshop/discussion group meeting.
We welcome chapter contributions in particular from Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist scholars, though others are welcome too, centered on the following themes:
– Religion and society
– Religion in National politics
– Religion and Economics
– Religions and secular laws
– Islam and power
– Hinduism and power
– Judaism and power
