Soul Shop for Communities introduces and explores how community members, particularly in the faith based communities, think and talk about su***de. Join us on November 7 from 6-8 pm at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Oxon Hill for a free event (registration required): https://soulshop-community-md2023.attendease.com/

Soul Shop for Black Churches is a one-day workshop designed for clergy, staff, lay pastors, and faith-based clinicians in the Black Church. Given the prominence of the church within Black communities, Soul Shop for Black Churches equips these leaders who are on the front lines of the mental health crisis to minister to those impacted by all the faces of trauma and struggle with regard to su***de. Register for the all-day workshop on November 8 in Oxon Hill: https://soulshop-md2023.attendease.com/

Each survivor of su***de loss grieves in their own way, and on their own timeline. Connecting with others who have lost a loved one to su***de, and hearing how they have navigated the pain of that loss, is a fundamental step toward hope and healing. Edmond is both a mental health clinician and a survivor of su***de loss, a dual identity he says can be hard to occupy. He once believed that because he was a psychologist, he couldn't share his personal loss with people. What Edmond now understands is that his status as a clinician doesn't lessen his grief, and that's okay.

Each survivor of su***de loss grieves in their own way, and on their own timeline. Connecting with others who have lost a loved one to su***de, and hearing how they have navigated the pain of that loss, is a fundamental step toward hope and healing. When Edmond's mother died by su***de, his family's Persian Jewish culture intimately shaped their experience of grief. He remembers sitting shiva — a seven-day mourning practice among Jewish people — with family and community, and feeling emotionally held and supported. For Edmond, this ritual was an important part of his grieving process.
