Moose monitoring is in full swing at the Northern Moose Alliance. In his latest “Moose Browse" update, our Wildlife Biologist Adam Mortensen describes the role of desk work, the limits of moose mortality notifications, and the importance of reaching a deceased moose quickly.

To get the highest quality data, we respond to mortalities as quickly as possible. To do that, we rely on two main tools.

How did apple trees come to grow on a remote wilderness island in Lake Superior?

NPLSF board member Tim Cochrane worked at Isle Royale early in his career, and he developed an appreciation for the island's apples and its unique history.

Now retired from decades in the National Park Service, including as Superintendent of Grand Portage National Monument, Tim is a popular author and historian. He recently took a deep dive into the mystery of Isle Royale’s apple trees. Learn what he found and stay tuned for more fascinating stories!

For over five millennia people have made their way to Isle Royale. Evidence of that presence is sometimes subtle and sometimes it is like the bow of the packet freighter America looming out of the depths of Lake Superior.

In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, he talks with Walt Lindala and Frida Waara about life and work aboard the University of Minnesota’s research vessel. We last week in Washington D.C with our friends and colleagues from and national park partners from across the country. Representing 5 national park units in three states, we had a busy schedule of meetings with congressional delegations from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. I’m always inspired by the value of face to face conversations on the hill!
