Summer heat doesn’t just make the air feel oppressive — it can make air pollution worse.

Heat and sunlight fuel chemical reactions that increase harmful pollutants, while worsening wildfires add dangerous smoke to the mix. Although U.S. air quality has improved since the Clean Air Act passed in 1970, unhealthy air remains a serious concern, especially during extreme heat.
