We just returned from a thoroughly wonderful trip to Tashkent, Bukhara, and Afshona. We accomplished a lot in a short time. We officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Avicenna Public Foundation regarding our Ibn Sina Garden Initiative. We held speeches, gave presentations, and there was a lot of media coverage, too :) All in all we’re glad to report that the “Abu Ali Ibn Sina: Great Heritage and Civilization” Conference was a great success and we look forward to our continuing collaboration with our great hosts.

Early in December, the people of Santa Fe turn out in large numbers to share in the Hispanic tradition of Las Posadas. A procession led by Joseph and Mary circles the Plaza, stopping along the way to ask for shelter. They are turned away from one house after another, depicted by actors standing on the rooftops at intervals. Whenever the homeowner rudely sends them away, that’s the cue for the rest of us to loudly boo them. A band follows, playing traditional hymns. Everyone participates - babies, children, lots of dogs and we all appreciate and enjoy and loudly participate in this Hispanic tradition Each time, actors on the rooftops turn them away — and that’s our cue to boo loudly. A band follows, playing traditional hymns, and everyone joins in: babies, children, families, and very enthusiastic dogs. A beautiful tradition that the whole community appreciates, enjoys, and keeps alive.

ARCH is very excited to be pursuing a new project in Uzbekistan, working closely with the Avicenna Public Foundation. On November 22, 2025 as part of an international roundtable we will discuss a cultural revitalization project for Afshona (more details to be revealed soon!). For now we can confirm that representatives of ARCH, Bukhara State Administration, Bukhara Medical State Institute, Department of Touristic Infrastructure of the Bukhara Region, and the Avicenna Public Foundation will be present. We thank Mr. Makhmudov, Chairman of the Board of the Avicenna Public Foundation, for his tireless efforts to make our joint vision a reality.

Greetings from beautiful Baku, where our President, Cheryl, is having an enriching travel experience! Cheryl has explored the Shirvanshah Museum Restaurant, featuring village scenes, artwork, and even dancing! Speaking of dancing, the Formula 1 Race pit stop crew perform a dance of their own ;) In 2023, ARCH International intern Iona visited Baku to conduct field research. While there, they were able to visit the brilliant carpet museum, shaped like a carpet!!! This museum, designed by Austrian architect Franz Janz, has the largest collection of Azerbaijani carpets in the world.

Have you ever heard of pysanky, or Ukrainian Easter eggs? Ukrainians have been making these eggs for millenia, and they are most often created around Easter. The eggs are created using a batik method, layering wax over different color dyes. The colors and motifs have different meanings, evoking spring, Jesus, rebirth, the sun, nature, and the Ukrainian goddess Berehynia.

Repressed during the Soviet era, the practice experienced a revival after independence, and is once again threatened. The cultural practice is currently listed on Heritage Craft’s Red List of Endangered Crafts due to the war in Ukraine.

ARCH intern Iona Volynets (whose father is Ukrainian) has been creating pysanky since they were three years old. In the Spring of 2024, they created an exhibit as part of their museum studies coursework in the Sue & Leon Genet Gallery in Syracuse, showcasing some of their eggs and educating visitors about the history and significance of the practice. In addition to traditional motifs, Iona likes to create modern images, like Syracuse University’s Otto the Orange, Lisa Larson’s cats, and a stunningly creepy rendition of the Lou Reed Transformer album cover! Hi, my name is Iona Volynets! Last week, I began my internship at ARCH with great excitement, and I will be posting more here in the next few months! I’m passionate about safeguarding cultural heritage in conflict and post-conflict areas, especially in Ukraine. I am currently a Marshall Scholar in the UK, where I just wrapped up an MA in Museum Studies at the University of Leicester, and am beginning an MSc in Conservation of Historic Buildings at the University of Bath. I’ve attached some pictures of myself at historic sites from my travels in Uzbekistan, Egypt, the UK, and Georgia, and a picture from my favorite ever exhibit, Maria Prymachenko: Glory to Ukraine at the Ukrainian Museum in New York City! Happy 818th birthday to mystic, poet, and teacher Mowlānā Jalāloddin Balkhi, known in the West as Rumi!

On this day 818 years ago, Rumi was born in the Balkh Province of Afghanistan. As a young man, Rumi moved to present-day Türkiye, fleeing the armies of Genghis Khan. At only 24, Rumi became the head of his madrasah after the death of his father (what were you doing at 24?;)).

His final work, spanning twelve years of work, was a single six-volume poem of forty thousand lines written in Farsi. He now rests in the Green Tomb in Konya.

At ARCH International we are finalizing our plans for a “Rumi Garden” with new energy. The garden will become a space to explore tangible and intangible heritage, and celebrate Rumi’s transcendent work.

In honor of his birthday, explore some of his poetry, courtesy of poets.org. All sources and translators are credited below the poems.

Which poem is your favorite? Feel free to comment your favorite Rumi poem or verse!
