It is managed by S.Jacob Scherr, former Director of Global Strategy, NRDC. NRDC launched the Cloud of Commitments to make visible and more accessible the success of the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development conference in Rio de Janeiro. One of largest global gatherings in history, Rio+20 did much more than just produce another international agreement. It also stimulated, inspired, an
d encouraged hundreds of specific commitments by countries, corporations, and communities to take action now on energy, water, cities, oceans and other challenges. The Cloud website was launched ato aggregate and highlight the most significant of the hundreds of these non-globally negotiated promises made in Rio+20 – which were valued at some $500 billion. Some of the initiatives are potential real game changers
While UN processes will continue to be important, it is the emergence of these commitments which take a number of different forms and labels. We sum them up as PINCs-Partnerships, Initiatives, Networks, Clubs or Coalitions. These PINCs are the drivers to accelerate progress towards a more sustainable future. The Cloud will be monitoring progress on "cornerstone commitments” made at Rio+20. The Cloud will provide for information and ideas to help shape the architecture for transparency and accountability for this emerging world of commitments. The Cloud of Commitments is an initiative of the Natural Resources Defense Council. For inquiries on cooperating and supporting the Cloud, please contact Jacob Scherr at [email protected].
