Nearly 70% of Obama’s itemized donors in 2012 started off as a small donor. For Romney, it was 39%. For McCain in 2008, 35%.

In every election since 1986, successful House challengers have spent less, on average, than the incumbents they beat.

In 2012, the successful challenger spent an average of $2.5 million. Defeated incumbents spent $3.1 million.
