I am Biotech

I am Biotech Science for Life The Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) is the world’s largest biotechnology trade association.

BIO is a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. We provide advocacy, business development, and communications services for more than 1,100 members worldwide. It is our mission to be the champion of biotechnology and the advocate for our member organizations - both large and small. Our members - many of whom are small emerging companies - are involved in the research an

d development of innovative healthcare, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products. Our members work every day to improve the human condition by curing the sick, feeding the hungry or developing cleaner, safer and healthier sources of energy.

Today, BIO is launching Fight of Our Lives, a national campaign to build understanding of biotechnology, the people behind it, and the life-changing hope it creates for millions - because behind every breakthrough is a story of people, purpose, and the drive to find what comes next.

Biotechnology has transformed what’s possible - but many are still waiting for the next generation of solutions. Fight of Our Lives brings those real stories forward and reinforces what it takes to keep progress moving: a strong, predictable environment where innovation can thrive and reach those who need it most.

Hear the stories. See the impact. Explore the history. And join us in sharing the promise of American biotech - and the fight it will take to preserve it.

Yesterday's session, "Balancing Global Opportunities and Trade Policy Risks," tackled the timely question: what are the current policy signals shaping capital flows and the trajectory of our innovation ecosystem?

Moderated by BIO’s Vice President of National Security & International Affairs, Kelly M. Seagraves, the throughline was clear: signals of certainty are essential to sustain strong capital formation and a globally competitive U.S. biotech ecosystem.

Thank you to panel speakers Daniel Brog, Managing Director at Locust Walk; Anthony Japour, CEO of iTolerance, Inc.; and Arda Ural, Americas Life Sciences Leaders at Ernst & Young (EY).

Day 1 of delivered! Across 10 sessions, leaders examined pressing issues facing our industry - from today’s capital environment and key drivers of renewed M&A activity to the evolving role of venture capital and family offices in strengthening the innovation ecosystem.

Policy priorities were also front and center, including regulatory considerations related to cross-border licensing trends - and trade policy risks shaping deal structures and valuation in an active tariff environment.

Beyond the stage, momentum carried into the hundreds of BIO Partnering® meetings, where investors, executives, and innovators engaged directly on capital formation and strategic collaboration.

On to Day 2!

Rare Disease Week is a reminder of what patient voices can achieve...

This year, the rare disease community helped secure reauthorization of the Rare Pediatric Disease Priority Review Voucher (PPRV) program - preserving a critical pathway for the development of new medicines and treatments.

Because patients raise their voices, progress continues.

WATCH: Throughout , we join the rare disease community and biotech innovators across the U.S. in underscoring the urgency of delivering real, measurable progress for the more than 30 million patients living with a rare disease in the U.S.

On February 11, BIO President & CEO John F. Crowley underscored that urgency in testimony before the House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Health, calling on policymakers to advance a 21st century access agenda that ensures scientific breakthroughs translate into more accessible and affordable treatments for patients. Sustaining innovation is essential - but innovation alone is not enough. A modern access framework must:

-Strengthen America’s innovation ecosystem
-Reinforce regulatory predictability and efficiency
-Address systemic barriers that stand between patients and the medicines prescribed for them

More than 15 million children in America live with a rare disease. Stories like that of Sammy Brazzo illuminate why the recent reauthorization of the program is critical to the rare pediatric community. This bipartisan program will continue to catalyze investment in rare pediatric disease research - accelerating the development of therapies for children who cannot afford to wait. This is Sammy's .

WATCH: Today, BIO President & CEO John F. Crowley gave his opening testimony before the House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Health, outlining how America can continue to lead the world in . In his remarks, John emphasized the following core priorities...

• Biotech as a national security imperative: With China rapidly scaling its biotech capabilities, maintaining U.S. leadership in biomedical innovation is essential to our economic strength, global competitiveness, and health security.

• Protecting America’s innovation ecosystem: Small and mid-sized biotech companies drive the majority of new medicines. They depend on strong IP protections, clear regulatory pathways, and a stable, market-based environment to sustain discovery.

• FDA predictability and efficiency: A science-driven, transparent, and well-resourced FDA is critical. Reducing time, cost, and complexity in development - and strengthening regulatory review - will accelerate patient access and keep the U.S. the global gold standard.

• Simplify the system and cut hidden supply chain costs: To address the real drivers of medicine affordability, policymakers must simplify the system and cut hidden supply chain costs that inflate what patients pay at the pharmacy counter.

• A roadmap for 21st century access: Removing financial and systemic barriers - capping out-of-pocket costs, reforming utilization management, and ensuring savings reach patients - will create a modern framework that puts patients first and improves long-term affordability.

As John made clear - there is not a moment to lose. America’s leadership - and patients’ lives - depend on our action today.

50 years of biotechnology - in 50 seconds. 🧬⏱️

In 1976, Genentech helped pioneer modern biotechnology here in the United States - launching an American innovation that has transformed how the world prevents disease, treats illness, and delivers hope. Throughout 2026, to mark biotech's 50th anniversary, BIO is proud to help honor that legacy through our "50 in 50" series - a reflection on 50 years of breakthrough innovations in 50 seconds.

This multimedia series will spotlight real voices, key milestones, and the momentum that has defined the last 50 years - and the policies, investment, and collaboration that is critical to securing the next 50 years of delivering health and hope around the world.
