No single organization can withstand on its own. Coalition building means many hands – no role is too small or unimportant. We withstand together.

We withstand by shining light into dark corners.

Public Welfare Foundation’s grantees are grappling with many angles of the criminal justice system. They courageously bring hidden issues to the forefront, calling upon our empathy, morality, and sense of responsibility to create true safety for our communities.

“If there is any silver lining to going through really difficult times, it's that you can take the learnings from that,” School Justice Project's Claire Blumenson said. “We were able to take sour learnings and make adjustments that have made us even stronger than before."

Regardless of the world they're presented with, Public Welfare Foundation partners are advancing a restorative, community-led, and racially just approach to justice with resilience and tenacity.

Public Welfare Foundation grantees aren’t just putting spoons to the ocean – they're working to spark systemic change that will shift the tides for all of us.

They are fierce advocates for and defenders of their communities, building sustained restoration and transformation through their persistent efforts.

Public Welfare Foundation’s grantees are deep wells of wisdom. In a recent survey conducted by the Foundation, our grantees expressed a clear desire for a greater ability to connect, share wisdom, and coordinate to advance common goals.

That's why PWF is launching The Collective: A Peer Learning Exchange, a virtual webinar series to spotlight promising justice transformation initiatives and organizational capacity strategies.

We invite partners and funders to join us on Wed. April 22 from 2 PM ET – 3:15 PM ET for the first webinar, Lessons from the Survivor Justice Movement: Sentencing Reform in Oklahoma and Georgia, featuring Executive Director of Women on the Rise GA Robyn Hasan-Simpson and Founder and former Executive Director of the Oklahoma Appleseed Center for Law & Justice Colleen McCarty.

Withstanding with School Justice Project (SJP).

SJP is a special education legal service and advocacy organization serving students who are involved in Washington, D.C.'s youth and criminal justice systems. The organization provides direct representation to D.C.’s court-involved young people; advocates for systems change through impact litigation and policy work; and works closely with communities to increase understanding of education rights and barriers.

At a moment where youth justice is facing a revival of tough-on-crime narratives and reform rollbacks, SJP is withstanding with tenacity and courage, refusing to mince their words or turn their back on the heart of their mission – and we’re grateful for their critical work.

Last month, Public Welfare Foundation’s President & CEO Candice C. Jones reflected on what it means to withstand in a moment where justice is maligned, and democratic norms are under enormous pressure.

Over the course of this year, PWF will continue to explore what it means to withstand and come out stronger on the other side. We hope you’ll join us in that exploration and, along the way, find your footing in trying times.

A portrait of Gil Scott-Heron by Brandan 'BMIKE' Odums looks pointedly at the work happening below in the True Reformer Building's Lankford Auditorium.

On his birthday, we are reminded of his most famous work, 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,' and its assertion that movement work cannot be phoned in. We cannot be sideline observers or passive passengers in our own destiny.

We must be ready and willing participants in the effort to catalyze lasting change.

One person or organization alone cannot right every injustice we face. History tells us collective power is the anchoring force behind great freedom movements.

Isolation is a tool of oppression. Lasting change begins when individuals, organizations, and system leaders come together and mobilize behind a shared vision.

This is how we withstand.
