In July of 2008, a group from WeCanRow DC descended upon the Row As One camp in New Hampshire. Having bought the privilege at an auction the year before, we embarked on a moonlight row at the end of the week. With Holly Metcalf as our stroke, it was as perfect a row as I any I can remember. This many years later, the photos taken that evening bring back the memory of a magical place among the dearest of friends, some no longer with us. Tina, Chris, Elena, Marilyn, Elise, Lydia, Anne, Ginny, Beth.

Four crews from the Survivor Rowing Network raced in a special exhibition event at Henley Masters Regatta to support their recovery from cancer

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Jennifer Hoblitzell Dumas
Congrats to Jen (3 seat), who rowed in the WeCanRow DC W4+ yesterday as part of the Survivor Row at Henley Royal Regatta.

Learned to row in: 2000, in Cambridge England. Joined CRC’s LTR 2016 and then repeated in 2017.

Currently rows with: Sun's Up Morning Advanced Sweep

Has rowed with: Morning/Advanced/Intermediate Sweep

Also had the chance to row in: Cambridge Alumni boats

The thing I like most about rowing is:
The people! I’ve met people whose paths I’d never cross in “normal” life and many of them become not just friends, but family – they’ve gotten me through some significant hurdles in life.

Rowing community involvement:
In addition to volunteering with WeCanRow DC, last year I also served as an Allies with Oars Ambassador.

When I'm not at the boathouse, I am:
A dog mom, Jamey’s partner, and a fiber (textile, not food) enthusiast!

Living a Henley Regatta dream:
The Survivor Rowing Network convinced Henley to include a Survivor Race and WeCanRow DC is one of four boats chosen to compete. I always wanted to attend Henley for the people watching. Never did I dream I’d actually be rowing on the course! This trip is especially meaningful as the race is only a few days shy of two years since I underwent a double mastectomy. Being in great rowing shape helped me make a relatively easy and swift recovery, so I am forever grateful to rowing for quite literally helping to save my life.

Congratulations to HERon Thames on your victory in today’s final! Well deserved! Thank you Survivor Rowing Network for this amazing opportunity! While only one crew crosses the finish line first, every woman here is already a winner. We are all survivors, and simply being here is a testament to our strength, resilience, and determination.
Events like this celebrate so much more than racing. They highlight our commitment to overcoming physical challenges, supporting one another, and proving that a cancer diagnosis does not define what we are capable of.

Every stroke is a victory. Every finish line crossed is a reminder of how far we’ve come.

Row strong. Live boldly. Together, we rise.
