📢 New Report! Plastic foam threatens our health AND our oceans. Single-use plastic foam— commonly used in takeout containers, cups, and packing peanuts — is made with toxic chemicals that have been linked to cancer. So why is there still so much of this harmful material being made?

🆕 NEW POLL ALERT: It’s not surprising that the majority of American voters want to reduce single-use plastic foam!

This problematic plastic, used for products like disposable cups, plates, and food containers, is not only harmful to our oceans, but also poses significant health risks to people. Styrene — the building block of plastic foam — is considered a probable carcinogen and has been found to leach out of plastic foam food containers.

TAKE ACTION! Tell your elected officials — support new laws to tackle plastic foam pollution at the source before it’s too late! >> https://oceana.ly/3EnRUhz

During our last Recycle It! Fairs and Shred event, Keep Liberty Beautiful and Oceana invited the community to a special viewing of “We’re All Plastic People Now,’ an award-winning documentary film on the hidden microplastic crisis. The movie asked, “How much evidence do we need before taking action?”

Maine debris can harm habitats, like coral reefs, that are the basis for marine ecosystems. One of the saddest impacts of marine debris is wildlife entanglement. Abandoned nets, ropes, fishing lines, other fishing gear, string, six-pack rings, and other types of marine debris can be death traps for many aquatic life forms. Turtles, fish, and even birds can get tangled up in these items, leading to injury, suffocation, starvation, and even death. Many animals can also mistake debris for food, leading to internal damage and intestinal blockage.

FREE EVENT ALERT 📽️: Join Oceana and Keep Liberty Beautiful on Saturday, August 17th at 12:00 PM at the Midway Community Complex located at 9397 E. Oglethorpe Highway, Midway for a free screening of Rory Fielding’s new documentary “We’re All Plastic People Now” on the global plastic pollution crisis featuring Oceana’s own Plastics Campaign Director Christy Leavitt and Oceana board member Ted Danson. The film shows the chilling reality of how pervasive plastic pollution is in our lives. Plastic is everywhere from the air we breathe to the water we drink.

Solving the plastic pollution crisis requires that we curb single-use plastic production and cut off the problem at the source. Reuse and refill systems can move us away from throwaway plastics. The future can include less plastic if we turn off the tap and invest in non-toxic reuse together.

Thank you to Keep Liberty Beautiful's executive director, Dr. Karen Bell for agreeing to partner in the screening of this important film and for joining us in addressing single-use plastic pollution.

👏 The Biden administration has committed to a plastic-free government! The administration announced that they will phase out single-use plastics across the federal government by 2035, and from its food service operations, events, and packaging by 2027. Oceana applauds for this new plan that will help protect our oceans, climate, and communities!

DID YOU KNOW: An estimated 10 TRILLION tiny plastic pellets, called nurdles, pollute marine ecosystems worldwide each year. And right now, there's no national law stopping it!

But Congress has the chance to change that with the Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act, which would protect our oceans and marine life.

Use your voice to support this important legislation today: https://oceana.ly/3xIl1bV

Oceana in Georgia was happy to collaborate with local partners in the screening of We're All Plastic People Now by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Rory Fielding! Oceana is featured in the documentary film which investigates the hidden story of plastic and its impact on human health and features interviews with Oceana board member Ted Danson and Plastics Campaign Director Christy Leavitt

Yesterday's 4pm film screening at Tybee Post Theater was the only film for the day and the event had a good turnout for a hot Sunday afternoon on Tybee Island. Moviegoers had popcorn, cool drinks, great discussions, and ways to take action on plastic pollution.

Many thanks to our local partners: Tybee Post Theater, Tybee Island Marine Science Center, Tybee Clean Beach Volunteers, and the Tybee Island community for the wonderful opportunity to address plastic in our oceans and our daily lives.

Next screenings of We're All Plastic People Now will be in Brunswick, Midway, and Atlanta, GA.

Congratulations to our Oceana colleagues in Florida! Along with their allies they successfully passed a bill that bans the intentional release of balloons in the state of Florida.

Georgians, it can be done. Let's get moving on a single-use plastic bill!

Intentionally releasing a balloon will soon be illegal in Florida. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill Monday creating the new law, which expands the state's current ban on releasing 10 or more balloons.
