Medicine For Peace

Medicine For Peace Medicine for Peace (MFP) is a medical relief and humanitarian organization, founded in 1991, dedicated to providing medical care to victims of war.

Medicine For Peace is an international health and humanitarian organization committed to assisting women and children who are victims of war and extreme poverty. MFP has developed medical and mental health programs in regions of armed conflict and extreme poverty, including El Salvador, Iraq, Bosnia and Haiti. MFP’s first medical team arrived in Iraq in June 1991 and through two conflicts in the G

ulf, MFP physicians and nurses performed health and nutrition assessments, established a pediatric clinic in a Baghdad hospital, delivered more than a million dollars in pediatric drugs to needy clinics, and took children with congenital heart disease and war related injuries to the United States for surgery. In 1995, MFP developed a school-based mental health program for Moslem children who were victims of ethnic cleansing in Kozarac, Bosnia, and with Bosnian colleagues operated the program for five years. For the past decade, MFP has operated a medical clinic in the mountainous Gros Morne region of Haiti, and has one of the largest women’s health initiatives on the island. MFP has released a series of reports on children’s health in Iraq and Bosnia, and produced the award-winning documentary on Iraqi children, “Children of the Cradle”. Because of the extensive experience MFP has had over the past twenty years caring for victims of war trauma and torture, in November 2009, MFP opened the Health Center for Torture Victims in Hyattsville, MD.

We are back on the road.
MFP is committed to providing free health care to vulnerable women in remote areas or to whom care is unavailable or unaffordable. For a decade our mobile clinics reached inaccessible areas where we screened thousands of women for cancer, sexually transmitted infections, including aids and other women's health problems. Three years ago we suspended our mobile clinics because of the threat of armed gangs who set up blockades along rural roads. As of April, our vans are back on the road, using safe routes, to care for women in the Gattereau clinic in Gonaives, which is an hour from Gros Morne.
We proceed cautiously to help women who need us more than ever during this time of crisis in Haiti.
