Sankofa Project DC Raising the bar of post high school expectation for girls!

SCSN is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has been providing prevention and intervention services to risk exposed youth since 1984. The name The Sankofa Project was chosen for SCSN’s Prong II Title IX programming because of its translated meaning — “fetch what is at risk of being left behind” – which, research has shown, is often the urban female student. The female student is at risk of be

ing left behind because of a lack of information about the educational benefits associated wth playing school based team sports; a general lack of knowledge of how to navigate the NCAA eligibility process; and/or the lack of programming and support systems that promote access to the resources and exposure opportunities necessary to be seen and recruited by college scouts … resources that are readily available for the majority of her male counterparts. OUR GOAL

INCREASE Awareness of the Physical, Psychological and Educational Benefits of Participating in School Based Team Sports;

INFORM Students, Parents, and Others of the History of Gender Equity in Education; the Purpose and Intent of Title IX; and, Scholarship Opportunities Available thru NCAA Eligibility; and,

INSPIRE More Underserved Middle and High School Students to Choose STEAM and other Non-Traditional Career Paths and Use Athletics as their Vehicle for Post Secondary Success. Our annual programming is designed to use positive peer pressure to encourage more female students to use athletics as a pathway to post secondary success by facilitating skill enhancing programs during NCAA open periods. These programs include:

DC Lady Baller Summer League;

Saturday Summer Olympics at DC/DYRS;

CASE (Career Awareness Skill Enhancement) Camp;

Unsigned Senior Travel Team;

Middle School Basketball Clinics;

Coach’s Corner Forums and Clinics;

The Bob Headen Classic;

and our flagship program …
