🎉 Celebrating 40 Years of Virtus — A Global Legacy of Excellence

Athletes Without Limits joins the international community in celebrating a remarkable milestone: 40 years of Virtus championing excellence, inclusion, and opportunity for athletes with intellectual impairment around the world.

Founded in 1986 with just 14 member nations, Virtus has grown into a global movement representing more than 500,000 athletes across 90+ countries. Over four decades, the organization has built competitive pathways that elevate athletes from local programs to the world stage, delivering:

Six editions of the Virtus Global Games

Athlete's participation in seven Summer Paralympic Games and one Winter Paralympic Games

Expanded eligibility pathways across II1, II2, and II3

A worldwide network of coaches, leaders, and partners committed to advancing inclusion in sport

This anniversary honors not only Virtus’ history, but also the athletes, families, member organizations, and leaders who have shaped the movement and carried its mission forward.

Official 40‑Year Logo Launch

On 20 February, Virtus unveiled its official 40‑year anniversary logo during the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Virtus World Nordic Skiing Championships in Kazakhstan.

For 40 years, Virtus has opened doors, elevated voices, and championed the belief that every athlete deserves the opportunity to compete, grow, and shine. Athletes Without Limits is honored to stand alongside this global family as the next chapter begins.

🌟 AWL Athlete Spotlight: Celebrating SHAWN ROSEMAN 🌟

Today, we’re honored to spotlight someone whose leadership, heart, and advocacy continue to shape the very soul of Athletes Without Limits — Shawn Roseman, our Winter Sports Team Director and a tireless champion for athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Recently, Forum Solutions, LLC celebrated Shawn’s incredible impact as a ski coach for the US Virtus Team, recognizing her work guiding athletes across Kitzbühel, Austria and Park City, Utah. They highlighted the environment she creates — one where athletes grow in confidence, experience international competition, and discover what’s possible when talent and support come together.

But the most powerful testimony comes from the athletes themselves.

One athlete shared:

“Shawn is the person you can talk to in a heartbeat. She listens, advocates, and shows up — on and off the ski slopes. She taught me that it’s not about the medals; it’s about closing the gap to the next highest person.

In Kitzbühel, when I received a trophy, I gave it to Shawn as a reminder of the countless hours she spends supporting every athlete — not just on our team, but anyone who needs help. Watching her scrape snow off boots, encourage athletes, and make sure everyone feels included reminds me that there is so much good in the world. That’s what Virtus is about.”

Shawn embodies the AWL mission: inclusion, excellence, leadership, and heart. She advocates fiercely, serves humbly, and believes in every athlete’s potential.
