A new pillow is a (relatively) inexpensive way to improve sleep. Pillows should be replaced every year or two say sleep experts. As you search for a new pillow, consider these factors:

1. Your sleeping position. Back, side, and stomach sleepers have very different needs. Look for a pillow that is made to support the way you sleep.

2. Your type of mattress. Sleep experts say a firmer mattress calls for a fuller pillow.

Be sure the foam inside is CertiPUR-US certified. Certified foam has low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million). Certified foams are screened for relevant chemicals, including flame retardants, that are classified as carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxins and are harmful to human health.

One of the most common questions we get is: “I found a product I want to buy, and the company that makes it uses the CertiPUR-US logo, but they are not listed in your online directory or app. Is the polyurethane foam used in their products certified?”

The short answer is: We cannot vouch for companies that are not listed in the CertiPUR-US directory. The only way to verify the use of certified foam is by using our online directory.
