On May 29th, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a request to conduct a welfare check at an individual’s home in Cana, Virginia. When two deputies arrived and made contact with male, he opened fire on both of them. 31-year old Deputy Sheriff Logan Utt was fatally wounded in the exchange. The second deputy was injured after being struck in his ballistic vest. The gunman fled the scene and after a 2-day manhunt, was apprehended in North Carolina. He has since been charged with murder.

Logan’s commitment to serving others began while he was a student at Carroll County High School when he joined the Cana Volunteer Fire Dept. He remained a proud and active member throughout his life. Following graduation, Logan answered the call to serve his country by joining the U.S Air Force. After completing his military service, he continued his dedication to public safety as a firefighter with the Mount Airy Fire Dept. for several years.

Alongside these accomplishments, Logan never lost sight of his lifelong dream of becoming a law enforcement officer in the community he called home. That dream became a reality in December 2023, when he was sworn in as a Deputy with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. From that day forward, he proudly served and protected the citizens of Carroll County with honor, courage, and integrity.

Logan was known for his contagious smile, larger-than-life personality, and caring spirit. He never met a stranger and was always willing to give his time to help others. Whether offering a helping hand, sharing a laugh, or simply listening, Logan made everyone feel welcomed and valued. He was also a devoted Christian and a man of deep faith, who loved the Lord and sought to live his life in service to others.

Logan leaves behind a loving wife, two children and many family members who miss him dearly. He will be laid to rest later today.

On Friday, Central Berks Regional Police Officer Kristin Yeager was responding to an emergency call to assist a neighboring agency. While enroute, Officer Yeager was involved in a single-vehicle crash in Earl Township, PA. Her patrol car left the roadway, collided into a tree and she was ejected from the vehicle. Kristen was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

42-year old Officer Kristen Yeager proudly served with the Central Berks Regional Police Department for two and a half years. Kristen previously worked as a school resource officer for both Boyertown Area High School and Lebanon County High School, and as an officer with Womelsdorf PD.

Kristen was a graduate of Exeter High School and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Administration of Justice from Shippensburg University, where she was a gifted and standout athlete on their field hockey team. She was a member of the 2005 team that won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship. She later coached field hockey and basketball to give back to the youth and remain in the sports that she held close to heart.

Kristen enjoyed fitness and being outside in the sunshine. But most importantly, she loved being a mom. Her kids were her absolute life. Kristen leaves behind a loving husband and three young children. Officer Yeager was the first line of duty death in the CBRPD since it was founded in 1993.

On Monday afternoon, officers in Greenwood, South Carolina attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Jeep that had been involved in several prior shooting-related incidents. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the 15-year old driver fled at a high rate of speed. During the attempt to evade law enforcement, the teen driver crossed the center median into the oncoming traffic lanes, and collided head-on with another Greenwood Police vehicle who was responding to assist. Tragically, Officer Don “DJ” Keller was killed in the crash. The three occupants of the vehicle that struck the officer’s patrol car, ages 15, 17 and 18, were all taken to the hospital.

31-year old Officer DJ Keller began his law enforcement career with the Greenwood Police Department in March of 2023, where he quickly distinguished himself through his commitment and skill. DJ became a K9 officer two years later, partnering with his loyal K9 companion, Vice. They were a team that was both respected and admired within the department and community. K9 Vice was inside the patrol car at the time of the crash but was unharmed. DJ also proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for four years active duty from 2016 until 2020, where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. Continuing his dedication to the safety and pride of his state, he remained an active member of the South Carolina National Guard.

Outside of his professional life, DJ was an avid outdoorsman who cherished time spent hunting, fishing, and shooting; activities that brought him peace and joy. These passions reflected his deep connection with nature and a quiet strength that defined his character. DJ leaves behind a loving wife, a 2-year old daughter, both parents and seven siblings. He will be laid to rest this weekend.
