DOJ Amended Complaint in U.S. Challenge to D.C.’s Gun Laws, Adding Challenge to Categorical Suppressor Ban and ARs

D.C. bans suppressors outright, even though they are widely owned and heavily regulated under federal law. Law-abiding Americans must complete an extensive ATF process just to obtain one.

Under Heller and Bruen, the Second Amendment protects arms in common use, and a categorical ban goes beyond regulation, it takes that policy choice off the table. This challenge argues D.C.’s suppressor ban is unconstitutional.

We worked alongside the , , , , and to move HB 2501 through Kansas.

On April 9, Laura Kelly signed it into law after strong bipartisan support.

The new law protects Kansans’ ability to own and use suppressors and short-barreled fi****ms if they are removed from the NFA.

Grateful to everyone who helped get it done. Big win.

With a $50,000 investment in ASA’s advocacy efforts, Rugged Suppressors is helping drive suppressor reform forward nationwide.

“At Rugged Suppressors, we know suppressors are safety devices plain and simple,” said Michael Derdziak, CEO of Rugged Suppressors. “The current regulatory framework under the National Fi****ms Act is outdated and unsupported by evidence. ASA continues to lead the charge in changing that reality, and we’re proud to stand behind their efforts with meaningful support.”

Built on durability, performance, and innovation, Rugged Suppressors continues to lead not just through products, but through action, supporting the rights of responsible Americans and advancing meaningful change.

This is what commitment looks like.

Earlier in April, the ATF began releasing new NFA data. Here are the highlights:

5,998,065 suppressors registered as of April 10. Less than 2,000 shy of 6 million.

285,000 in 2011 when ASA was formed.

Median wait times around 6 days. Over 500,000 Form 4s processed through March, most for suppressors.

All in all, the gun community is becoming a much quieter place, and we are all about it!

“At Lipsey’s, we believe that supporting the Second Amendment also means advocating for practical tools that enhance safety and responsibility,” said Laurie Lipsey Aronson, CEO and Chairwoman of Lipsey’s. “Suppressors help protect hearing, reduce noise concerns, and improve the overall shooting experience. Moments after Rob Cekada was confirmed, he joined Todd Blanche and ATF leadership to sign a landmark package of 34 pro-Second Amendment rules.

We were honored to be at DOJ alongside the National Rifle Association, Second Amendment Foundation, Fi****ms Regulatory Accountability Coalition, Gun Owners of America, National Association for Gun Rights, and National Shooting Sports Foundation to witness it.

This marks a major milestone in ATF’s New Era of Reform following Trump’s historic pro-2A executive order.

ATF’s Historic Reform Package: What It Means for Suppressors.

Big changes are on the horizon for the NFA community. The ATF has announced 34 new pro gun rules, many pending public comment, and if finalized these could reshape how suppressors and other NFA items are owned and used.

Here’s what you need to know:

No More CLEO Notifications
Applicants will no longer have to share sensitive tax information with local law enforcement.

Joint Registration for Spouses
Married couples can legally share access to NFA items with no trust required.

Easier Interstate Travel
No more notifying the ATF when traveling across state lines with NFA items for less than 365 days. Suppressors were already exempt.

Pistol Brace Rule Rescinded
The stabilizing brace rule is being fully rolled back.

$0 Tax on NFA Items
Updated regs reflect a $0 tax for suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs thanks to recent legislative changes.

These changes are not final yet. Public input will play a key role so stay informed and be ready to engage.
