Medicaid needs your help! As you saw in our email from earlier this week (see below), senators are working on a new health care bill – Graham-Cassidy – that will end Medicaid as we know it and take health coverage away from 32 million Americans. But we can stop it.

Senators are home the next few days, and they need to hear from you. Will you call their local office (you can look that up here) and leave the message below? Even if you’ve already called their DC office, call their local offices too. And once you do, urge everyone you know to do the same. They could vote on Graham-Cassidy as soon as Wednesday, September 27.

Thank you for raising your voices to protect basic health assistance.

Meredith Dodson
RESULTS Director of U.S. Poverty Campaigns

On Thursday Senate leaders unveiled their health care bill. The new legislation would do even more damage than the House bill passed last month by gutting Medicaid and taking away health coverage from millions. In particular, the Senate’s cuts and caps to Medicaid are worse over time than the House bill, putting health coverage for children, people with disabilities, and seniors at serious risk. We need a strong backlash over the next few days!
CALL BOTH YOUR SENATORS TODAY at (800) 826-3688 and say:
“I urge Senator ______________ to oppose any health bill that cuts or caps Medicaid or causes millions of Americans to lose their health insurance. Medicaid plays a critical role in my community/my life (SHARE A 1-2 SENTENCE STORY IF YOU CAN!) and we are counting on the senator to oppose any legislation that ends Medicaid as we know it.”

Vote yes today to fund Pre-K for all Santa Fe's children!!

04/26/2017

$1,233,527.91

That’s how much the Soda Industry has given to try to stop Pre-K in Santa Fe. Other than an in-kind donation from the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce, the so-called “Better Way” PAC has not raised one penny from anyone not associated with the Soda Industry.

And what are they spending their money on? Lies.

The Soda Industry has a new round of TV ads and mailers that call upon the City to use the so-called budget surplus to fund Pre-K. But they know that this fund simply cannot be used for Pre-K. Once again, they are lying to protect their profits.

Yesterday, City Councilor Carmichael Dominguez, who chairs the Council’s Finance Committee, could not have been more clear:

“I have been troubled to read that the PAC funded by the Soda Industry is trying to confuse voters by suggesting that any kind of one time surplus at the city level could be used to fund Pre-K, a recurring program. As Chair of the City’s Finance Committee, I can say definitively that the city cannot use a one-time surplus to fund a recurring program. It is foolish to even suggest so and calls into question the motive of the opposition… I call on the ‘Better Way’ PAC, funded by the Soda Industry, to stop lying to voters immediately.” ~ Councilor Carmichael Dominguez
It is now asked and answered. The surplus cannot be used to fund Pre-K for Santa Fe.

As the saying goes, “follow the money.” And the money leads right to the door steps of the American Beverage Association and the Soda Industry. Let’s be clear: They are spending $1,233,527.91 to protect one thing and one thing only - their profits from the sale of their soda.

Don’t let the soda industry keep Santa Fe’s children from having Pre-K and the opportunity to succeed, just to protect their soda profits.

Please join us in a special, Pre-K Early Voting Day this Thursday, April 27. You can vote at either the Genoveva Chavez Community Center or at City Hall.

Thank you Santa Fe. Let’s do the right thing and help our kids, not the Soda Industry.

See you at the polls!

Child Poverty in NM Panel April 30 at 9am

Especially in these turbulent times, it is important to understand the extent and effects of poverty, especially for children, and what policies can be put in place to help them.

This panel will explore child poverty in America, and in New Mexico in particular. The speakers will look at policies that alleviate poverty (for health, food and income) and they will discuss how we can take action for children.

Organizers are Lydia Pendley, Estelle Berger, and Gerry Fairbrother, all members of the Santa Fe chapter of RESULTS, a national anti-poverty lobbying group.

RESULTS Santa Fe meets at the Committee Room of the UU Santa Fe building on the second Saturday of each month (10:15 am to 12:30). Visitors are welcome. For more information, contact Kitty Sherlock at [email protected]
