The Atlantic Magazine published a photo essay about Wesaam al-Badry, an Iraqi-born photographer, who uses photography to tell his story and present the resilience and dignity of his family and friends.

Al-Badry’s family fled Iraq due to the Gulf War and ended up in a refugee camp in Saudi Arabia, where he received his first camera. They were eventually relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska. Al-Badry’s photography series, “From Which I Came,” features his family and friends and presents them as resilient and dignified, despite the racism and cultural clash they face.

He aims to showcase their daily lives and present them as individuals rather than imposing stereotypes on them. Al-Badry wants his subjects to see themselves as part of a rich culture, but not archaic figures stuck in the past.

‘This book is about the third time I learned I was Muslim—and the first time that I decided it for myself.” So writes Omar Mouallem at the beginning of “Praying to the West: How Muslims Shaped the Americas,” a fascinating, occasionally exasperating and almost infallibly instructive read.
