CONDITIONS LEADING TO ECONOMIC VALUE: Utility and Scarcity.

"Utility, or the capacity to satisfy wants, is a necessary condition for economic value, but it is not a sufficient condition. An antelope munching grass in an African mountain valley is certainly satisfying wants, as is the traveler quenching his thirst at a nearby spring. The grass and the water have utility of the highest order. So has the air that both antelope and traveler must breathe. Such utility, great as it is, however, does not engender economic value. Why?... Because the tender grass, the spring water, and the pure mountain air ARE FREE [...] and there is no difficulty in attainment". -Carlos Fallon-
