Today, in honor of World Heritage Day, we stand to protect and conserve the cultural heritage of Notre-Dame de Chartres. This year is particularly significant as we start the celebrations of the Millenium of the Cathedral. In 1979, Chartres Cathedral was the first French monument to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Monument:Built fairly rapidly and in nearly one stride, Chartres Cathedral, owing to the unity of its architecture and stained-glass, sculptured and painted decoration, constitutes the complete and perfected expression of one of the most characteristic aspects of medieval art.

We grieve the passing of our great friend
Servane de Layre Mathéus
Co-founder and President of Chartres, sanctuaire du Monde
Honorary Trustee of American Friends of Chartres

on January 27, 2020

Servane’s life epitomized love and peace.
Till the end, Servane dedicated her energy to the conservation of Notre-Dame de Chartres,
She believed in passing the torch of
"Cathedral Builders" who span centuries, cultures and beliefs.
We will miss her, but she will remain our source of inspiration. We will continue her work.

The magnificent image of the five lancets of the South Portal which you see on our page was taken by our great friends Dennis Aubrey and his wife PJ McKey Aubrey. Dennis, who served as adviser to AFC's Board of Trustees, left us prematurely on July 12, 2019. We feel such tremendous sadness. Dennis was such an extraordinary person brilliant, kind, generous, talented, knowledgeable beyond the imaginable, and yet very humble. Dennis gifted American Friends of Chartres and the world a remarkable collection of photographs of Gothic and Romanesque churches which he and PJ took together over many years, a record of the world's cultural patrimony that will endure for ever. His memory will keep inspiring us as we work on the preservation of Notre Dame de Chartres. We will miss you Dennis, but you will always be with us. May you rest in Peace.
