It is always such a joy to meet one of my mentees turned co-laborer in the women in technology space. And that is exactly what happened yesterday when I got to meet again Dr. Angela Azumah Alu for the third time!
Years ago in December 2015, I found this amazing talent of a woman during the inaugural Excel in Your Career Workshop that I curated in Accra, Ghana as part of seven maiden events.
I interviewed her with the powerhouse of woman in Ama Dadson during a simulation and invited her to join the newly formed organization: Women Who Code-Accra.
I would later trust Angela to execute the same program she participated in as I was absent from Ghana but present in the Leadership about 6 months later when I appointed her at a Lead for the program. Angela traveled from Accra to Kumasi by bus to Garden City University College, Ghana
As our network always lagged in financial donations compared to developed countries' chapters, I had to sponsor her trip. Angela executed this assignment diligently in spite of heavy rains that trip. Before Women Who Code folded up in April 2024 she was serving as one of three Co-Directors as I served as the Founding Executive Director.
When I formed Coders Who Travel Inc., and was piloting whether women who knew their craft in the Tech Space would give back to other women if training resources, transportation, accommodation and meals were taken of, she helped me answer that question with a resounding yes.
I am proud that via Coders Who Travel Inc., Afia Owusu-Forfie and Stephen Yeboah (Former Chief Actuary of SSNIT Ghana), we financed that trip she took with another equally talented woman called Akua Oseiwah Ahenkorah
For Angela and Akua took a flight from Accra to Kumasi to give back to women in Interview Simulation and Python Programming respectively at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi
In the YouTube link below, Angela shares her experience with Coders Who Travel: https://lnkd.in/eeX4HD37. She most always includes me in important milestones even her personal life.
I was delighted to learn that through her job in Ghana she had been sponsored to attend the World Bank meetings all week. So, I did not hesitate to bring her home yesterday to have lunch that my Mama prepared for her.
I have a Feather Flag of CWT hoisted in front of my home. So, we thought it appropriate to take a picture by it. We have come a long way!
As I reflected on our friendship and partnership, I realized that she is one to hold very close! When she wanted to get married last year, she confided in me about her plans very early than some of my closest relatives and friends.
When she needed to power through her PhD, I was right there supporting her with my prayers and getting more Prayer Warriors I pray with through the Sisters of Faith support group!
There is more but let me pause here. DrAngelaVisitsAfia
