Reporting on conflict, corruption and injustice takes immense bravery. That's why we are delighted to announce that entries for the 2026 Awards are now open!

Now in their 25th year, the Kurt Schork Awards were set up in memory of Kurt, an American journalist killed on assignment for Reuters in 2000 and considered one of the great freelance journalists of our time.

Let's celebrate the brave freelancers, local journalists and fixers who work tirelessly to tell these stories.

Kurt and Associated Press cameraman Miguel Gil Moreno de Mora were shot in a military ambush in Sierra Leone 25 years ago today. Shortly afterwards, Kurt’s family, friends and colleagues came together to set up the Kurt Schork Memorial Fund to pay lasting tribute to his memory and to keep the world aware of the debt we owe every day to brave journalists who engage in courageous reporting of conflict, corruption, injustice and human rights transgressions.
