The Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism uniquely honor the work of freelance journalists – and local reporters in developing countries or nations in transition – who often otherwise receive little recognition. It was established by friends, family and colleagues of Kurt Schork, an American freelance journalist who was killed in a military ambush in Sierra Leone in May 2000 while on assignment for Reuters.

Reporting on conflict, corruption and injustice takes immense bravery. That's why we are delighted to announce that entries for the 2026 Awards are now open!

Now in their 25th year, the Kurt Schork Awards were set up in memory of Kurt, an American journalist killed on assignment for Reuters in 2000 and considered one of the great freelance journalists of our time.

Let's celebrate the brave freelancers, local journalists and fixers who work tirelessly to tell these stories.
