For Warrior-Scholar Project’s seventh year at Caltech, enlisted service members and veterans took part in a weeklong STEM academic boot camp designed to prepare them for the demands of higher education.

Participants attended lectures led by Caltech faculty, worked alongside research leaders, toured campus facilities, and connected with student veterans who have successfully navigated the transition to higher education.

For Navy veteran and WSP-Caltech alumnus Warren Knowles, the experience showed him what pursuing STEM education could look like. As he shared, “I recommend this program for any veteran who is curious about science and wants to learn more about how a technical university like this one could change their lives.”

Meet TJ Fryer: A U.S. Navy veteran and former electronic technician, attended Warrior-Scholar Project's STEM academic boot camp at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to challenge himself as he prepares for his return to college. 📚

After taking community college courses and exploring different academic paths, TJ joined WSP to step outside his comfort zone and see what was possible. While the pace and rigor of MIT initially felt intimidating, the experience transformed the way he viewed himself and his future. 🤝

One of his biggest takeaways was realizing that he didn't dislike math, he disliked uncertainty. By learning to ask for help, collaborate with others, and embrace challenges, he discovered a new confidence in his abilities. Most importantly, he left committed to becoming the first person in his family to graduate from college and earn a STEM degree.

Meet Dennis Ibasan Go: A U.S. Navy veteran, attended Warrior-Scholar Project's academic boot camp at William & Mary as he prepares for the next chapter of his education. 📚

Already holding a bachelor’s degree, Dennis joined WSP because he believes learning never stops. Encouraged by fellow WSP alumnus John Quedado, he wanted to challenge himself in an academic environment while preparing to pursue a Doctor of Education. 🎓

Although he arrived wondering if he could still thrive in the classroom after more than 26 years of military service, he left with renewed confidence and a stronger sense of belonging. Throughout the week, he sharpened his academic skills, rediscovered his voice as a scholar, and was reminded that the leadership, discipline, and resilience developed in the military are just as valuable in higher education.

Meet Giovanna Lopez: A U.S. Navy veteran and former sonar technician, Giovanna attended Warrior-Scholar Project's business academic boot camp at Yale University to prepare for the next chapter of her academic journey. 📚✨

Already committed to lifelong learning through certifications in grant writing, digital marketing, e-commerce, and project management, Giovanna came to WSP looking to build a strong academic foundation and connect with other veterans pursuing higher education.

Throughout the week, she gained confidence, expanded her network, and discovered a community that reminded her she wasn't navigating this journey alone.

Meet Mozella L. McCoy-Flowers: A U.S. Navy veteran and former hospital corpsman, Mozella attended Warrior-Scholar Project's humanities academic boot camp at William & Mary to prepare for the next step in her academic journey. 📚

As she worked toward completing her bachelor's degree in criminal justice, Mozella came to WSP hoping to build her confidence in the classroom. Throughout the week, she strengthened her writing, critical thinking, and discussion skills while discovering a community that encouraged her every step of the way.

As a wheelchair user, she arrived unsure of what to expect, but quickly found a cohort that embraced her as a valued peer and supported her throughout the week.

Meet Edric Camacho: A U.S. Navy veteran who served as a machinist's mate nuclear and engineering laboratory technician, Edric attended Warrior-Scholar Project's STEM academic boot camp at Stanford University to connect with other veterans pursuing higher education. ⚛️📚

Although Edric entered WSP with a strong academic background, he quickly discovered that the greatest value of the program wasn't just the coursework—it was the people. Throughout the week, he found a community of veterans who shared similar experiences, built meaningful connections, and reminded each other that they belong in higher education.
