MobilizeGreen

MobilizeGreen We develop young people so the environmental movement reflects the communities most impacted by climate change.

MobilizeGreen develops leaders who share the values of the communities most impacted by climate change. By removing barriers and creating access to career pathways, MobilizeGreen connects youth of color with leadership opportunities through partners working to solve environmental issues. We help young people launch their careers, provide access to hands-on work experience, soft skills training, and professional development, and help partners get work done.

Joe, Maintenance Fellow from the 2025 MIFP Cohort in MobilizeGreen’s Maintenance & Infrastructure Fellowship Program, tackled a bridge replacement project on the Central Washington National Wildlife Refuge. Along with two other MobilizeGreen fellows, Casey and Brett, and on-site professional FWS maintenance staff, Joe worked to remove an old bridge from the site and construct a new, safer replacement.

The fellows completed this project by removing the old bridge, transporting a new bridge to the site, and installing it. Before putting in the new bridge, Joe and his team poured a slab of concrete to support the bridge. Additionally, the underside of the bridge was covered with wire to avoid damage from beavers, a potential hazard for wooden structures on the refuge.

Moving the new bridge to the site was a challenge due to its weight, but thanks to the extra sets of hands from the visiting fellows, the team was able to successfully move and install the bridge.

Joe shared, “The best learning experience I got from this was strategically working with a group.” The team had to work together to transport and place the heavy new bridge, leading to strong teamwork while completing important deferred maintenance on the refuge.

Liz is a Maintenance Fellow serving through MobilizeGreen’s Maintenance & Infrastructure Fellowship Program on the Willamette Valley National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Throughout January and February, Liz organized and completed an ecological restoration and safety improvement project across a 110-acre parcel of the refuge.

Four additional MobilizeGreen fellows, Abigail, Alex, Andrea, Sophia, and Xaydwiind, arrived on site to assist Liz in executing this project. In order to accomplish their tasks, fellows used post pullers, fencing pliers, wire cutters, digging bars, and battery-powered impact drivers. The fellows with heavy equipment certifications also operated a UTV, skid steers, and attachments such as buckets and grapplers to remove large debris and segments of fencing in an efficient manner.

Reflecting on her experience, Liz shared, “My best learning experience was recognizing how infrastructure decisions directly impact wildlife movement and ecosystem health. Seeing how seemingly small structural barriers fragment habitats reinforced the importance of thoughtful restoration.”

During the project, some challenges arose, like encountering equipment in need of service, but this allowed Liz to practice problem-solving while maintaining the project timeline and safety compliance. She stated that “successfully navigating these setbacks required flexibility, clear communication, and a proactive approach to risk management.” Liz gained leadership experience through directing the project alongside tackling the hands-on fieldwork.

Liz said, “What I liked most about the Oak Creek project was seeing a previously neglected area transform into something functional and environmentally beneficial with a long-term positive ecological impact.”

Austin is a Maintenance Fellow serving through MobilizeGreen’s Maintenance & Infrastructure Fellowship in Kotzebue, Alaska, a small town just above the Arctic Circle. Working alongside Selawik NWR professional maintenance staff, Austin supports day-to-day operations while learning what maintenance work looks like in a remote, cold-weather environment.

Reflecting on his experience, Austin said, "It’s been great working out here, the environment is much different than what I was used to in California, but I’ve grown to love it. I love learning about the local communities, local fish, and the upkeep of cold buildings. I feel like I’ve grown a lot since I’ve gotten here and learned a lot of useful skills.”

Being in the Arctic Circle, over the summer, Austin experienced days with 24 hours of sunlight, and now over the winter, is experiencing days without any sunlight, with both options having their pros and cons. He shared that this winter has had an average temperature of -12°F, which is warmer than usual, and the area has received so much snow that it went up to waist level. Austin says, “I prefer the cold over blazing heat any day.”

This winter, Austin has been using several pieces of heavy equipment for removing snow, including a bobcat with a bucket and snowblower and a truck with a plow attachment. Additionally, he had the opportunity to snowmobile across the Baldwin Peninsula. Now, he and the other FWS maintenance staff are focused on vehicle maintenance, landscaping/snow removal, and planning for refuge upkeep projects in the summer.
