Congratulations to Empower DC on the groundbreaking of the Alexander Crummell School Community Center in Ivy City last month!

The Crummell School was built in 1911 to serve the Black children of Ivy City and Trinidad and closed in 1977. For more than 40 years it sat vacant, boarded up, and fenced off from the community. Through a 20-year campaign that defeated a polluting bus depot and high-cost condos proposed for the site, Empower DC and Ivy City residents won $35.6 million in the DC budget to restore it for the community instead. The project will transform the long-vacant landmark into a modern community center and park, with completion expected in spring 2028.

A special tribute to Empower DC Executive Director Parisa Norouzi, pictured at the groundbreaking wearing the names of Empower DC members who sadly didn't live to see this day. Their legacy lives on through this major organizing win for the community.

Earlier this month, we partnered with Funders for LGBTQ Issues to host Pride in the DMV, an event centering q***r joy and the importance of funding LGBTQ+ organizations and communities, especially amid recent court rulings that continue to erode LGBTQ+ rights and protections. Thank you to all the funders, panelists, performers, and artists who attended and made this such a fun and powerful event! Special thanks to Sora Devore for capturing it all, and to Shaw's Tavern for hosting us.
