🌱 From Rainy-Season Farmer to Year-Round Producer 🌱
In Abutaber Village, Apac District, farmer Michael Ekwang once depended entirely on seasonal rains to grow maize, cassava, and beans — crops with low profit margins and high risk. His income was unpredictable, and supporting his family was a constant struggle.
In 2024, Michael joined our drip irrigation program. With guidance from our project officer, he planted two sachets of cabbage. From his first harvest, he earned almost $200 and stored three bags for his household. Encouraged, he expanded into higher-value crops like eggplants and garden eggs (Entula). Since June, his fields have produced reliably — giving him about $40 weekly in income.
The results have been transformative. Michael has covered the full cost of his irrigation system, paid school fees, and even cleared hospital bills during his wife’s pregnancy. Now, he is saving with a goal to purchase more land and expand his farming.
“Last year, my wife was pregnant, and the hospital required more money. I used the cabbage harvest to clear the bills. Now I’m looking forward to saving and buying more land for farming.”
Michael’s journey shows how drip irrigation empowers farmers to break free from the limits of rain-fed agriculture — creating steady income, resilience, and hope for the future. 💧🌍

In March this year, David Otim joined our drip irrigation initiative. In exchange for a modest deposit up front and a contractual promise to pay the balance over the next three years, we supplied David with a complete irrigation system including drip lines, hose, tank and a pedal pump to feed water from a nearby swamp.

At the time David signed up, he was earning about a dollar a day. Yet, he had to support his wife, his four kids and his 90-year old mother. He struggled to put food on the table and, all too often, his children would be turned away from school because he was unable to pay their fees.

In four short months, however, everything has changed. Whereas previously his crop was limited to maize and beans, the drip system has enabled David to grow cabbages and tomatoes – and to do so during dry season when prices are at their apex. He has already made about $500 from his first irrigated harvest (with more to come) and his projected annual earnings are over $2,500 - a five-fold increase in income over the previous year!

David proudly told us that “I have cleared all of my children’s fees for this term so they are able to attend school every day.” He also said that he had purchased bricks for a house he plans on building for his mother. Moving forward, he is hoping to buy more land and even some cows.

David’s life has truly turned around and, as this is an initiative that can pay for itself over time, we are confident that it can be scaled to reach thousands of farmers just like him.

My Eco-smart stove is very good. I always put in just a handful of charcoal once, and my beans get ready without adding more, because even after the charcoal burns out, the stove stays hot for a long time. Now I spend less and use most of my money to run my charcoal and grain business as a way of earning a living. The charcoal I use daily only costs 1,000 UGX, which has greatly reduced my spending on fuel. The stove is also very strong—I bought mine in 2019, and it’s still working well to this day.

Introducing tiered services for preventative maintenance

In 2017, we partnered with local communities, Hand Pump Mechanic Associations, and national and district local governments to establish EverFlow, a preventative maintenance initiative that brings reliable water access to rural communities in Northern Uganda. While EverFlow was successful in consistently achieving a functionality rate of over 99%, and customers reported great satisfaction, we still faced challenges with payment compliance and high dropout rates.

But we didn't give up. We listened to our customers and modified EverFlow from a one-size-fits-all to a tiered service approach. We launched this new version of EverFlow in February 2023 in two districts, and we’re hopeful that tailoring the payments to individual communities’ desired levels will deliver better results.

We know that there are still several rural water system challenges to work through so that rural communities can reap the benefits of reliable water access, which is why we continue to work closely with our partners Whave Solutions and Ugandan Water Project towards operationalizing the national O&M framework for rural point water sources.

We celebrate today with exciting news! The fourth year of our “Universal Access to WASH” partnership with charity: water has officially kicked off. During the grant period, we will:
💧install 20 new clean water boreholes,
💧rehabilitate 25 broken-down handpumps,
💧construct 6 latrine blocks in three schools, and
💧complete 1 piped water scheme.

This will improve WASH access to over 23,000 people in Northern Uganda.

We will also conduct 46 community and school WASH trainings and pilot Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) in 15 communities towards raising funds for water source operation and maintenance.

Thank you, charity: water, for being such an incredible partner! We look forward to yet another great year serving rural communities together.

Happy ! On this special day, please join us in celebrating and honoring women. They are truly phenomenal! In our work, we see firsthand the resilience, dedication, and love with which rural women work to provide for their families and improve their communities. We see the commitment and sacrifice of our female team members as they withstand sun, dust, and all manner of hardships to expand clean water and clean energy access to remote places. For that, they have our utmost respect.

Our commitment is to continue improving their lives by exponentially expanding access to the most basic needs and creating a supportive workplace so they can thrive.

Clean water access has powerful ripple effects. Beyond the immediate health benefits, it gives rural communities more time to spend their day starting businesses, learning new skills, and improving their lives.

We had the pleasure of hosting visitors from Clean Cooking Alliance and UN Capital Development Fund at Lifeline’s Uganda office and EcoEnergy cookstove factory last week.

Our discussions centered around strategies to enhance production efficiency, forward financing, price points for EcoSmart stoves, and the possibility of automating certain components. We’re thrilled to work with CCA and UNCDF toward expanding access to clean cooking.

Last week, the Lifeline in-country team held an organizational strengthening workshop. Our WASH, Environment, and Support team members conducted SWOT analyses and discussed innovative programming that makes business sense and achieves sustainable impact.

We're proud to work with a passionate, dedicated team committed to making a positive difference in rural communities. Thanks to all team members for their contributions and our Director of Business and Program Development, Zoe Keone Pacciani, for facilitating such a great workshop.
