❗️Survivors Deserve a Way Out — Please

Share and donate if you are able

Twenty-eight years ago, I left my abusive husband with a five-year-old and no safety net. There was no GoFundMe in 1998. What made it possible for me to leave was the love and generosity of friends. I was able to start over.
My friend Grace (not her real name) deserves that same chance.

She’s in her second trimester, has an 18-month-old son and an 11-year-old daughter, and is working to create safety and stability for her family.

If you’re able, please help support their safety, security, and basic needs.

When our Executive Director, Taylar Castellanos, launched the Campaign to Close Central Cell Block, she asked Rev. Graylan Hagler to moderate the panel. He did not hesitate.

We were deeply honored to have such a powerful, principled advocate stand with Who Speaks For Me? in this effort.

Rev. Hagler was fierce, brilliant, and strategic. He fought cancer with the same clarity and determination he brought to his lifelong advocacy. Cancer ravished his body, but it never touched his mind or his fierceness. He was publishing as recently as last week.

What a powerful soul. We are honored to have worked alongside him.
May his memory be a blessing.

Please hold and their daughter, Aziza, in your hearts.

Campaign to Close Central Cell Block. Graylan Hagler was a force to be reckoned with and be did not back down in the face of injustice. He will be missed.

We are thrilled that Rev. Graylan Hagler will be moderating the kick-off forum of our Campaign to . Join us on February 23 @ 5pm and learn how you can join the the fight to !

The conditions at CCB are horrid. Roaches crawling all over the cells, no access to soap or hand sanitizer and only metal bunks to sleep on with no mattress or blanket. Detainees are held here when first arrested. 98% are released back to the community and 77% are “no papered”— meaning charges are dropped and they never see a judge.

This is inhumane! Mayor Bowser and the DC Department of Corrections need to know we will not stand for our community to be subjected to these unsanitary conditions.

Forget cleaning it! Close it.

In case you want to read the entire ruling and order. This was a huge when for WSFM and all small nonprofits founded and run by people with lived experience. No one has a right to tell us we don’t have a seat at a table that was built on our survival.

Stop for a moment and let it sink in that people who are incarcerated in LA are fighting to save the homes of multimillionaires. Wealthy people with multiple homes are gifted the labor of people who are not free because it’s cheap and their lives are expendable. Ask yourself what happens to people incarcerated in the fire zone if the worst happens. It’s criminal and an act of violence against the most marginalized for the material possessions of the elite.
