World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a reminder that abuse doesn't always look the way we expect it to. It can be subtle, hidden, and especially difficult to see in older adults living with serious illness.

That's why we created Breaking the Silence™, our free resource guide developed in partnership with NO MORE, to help caregivers, clinicians, and families recognize what's happening and know how to respond.

The Guide Covers:

✅ Understanding the different types of abuse: physical, emotional, sexual, financial, and neglect

✅ Recognizing behavioral and physical warning signs that something may be wrong

✅ Risk factors and common characteristics of victims and perpetrators

✅ Resources for caregivers and families on where to turn for support and intervention

This National Nursing Assistants' Week, we want to take a moment to recognize the CNAs across our member organizations who show up every single day for patients and families navigating some of life's hardest moments.

CNAs are at the heart of hospice and advanced illness care. They bring a human presence that no one else can replicate, and their work shapes the experience of every patient they touch.

To our member CNAs: thank you for your dedication and the care you bring to this work every day.

And that's a wrap on the 2026 NPHI Philanthropy Conference in Nashville!

Over two incredible days, our philanthropy leaders dove deep into the conversations that matter most: from building community through foundations and grants, to thoughtful campaign considerations, small event fundraising strategies, and integrating philanthropy into care delivery throughout the patient journey.

A huge thank you to our on-the-ground team, Stephanie, Robin, and Dina for making every detail of this event come together. Thank you as well to our generous sponsors, to Alive Hospice for opening their doors and welcoming us as our host member, and to our Philanthropy Collaborative leaders and presenters who brought such depth, expertise, and energy to every session.

A new GAO report released this week by Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal and Congresswoman Linda Sánchez finds that Congress must reform the Medicare hospice benefit to address misaligned payment incentives, reduce excessive spending, and strengthen oversight.

As Ranking Member Neal and Congresswoman Sánchez put it, Congress must pursue "reforms to modernize the hospice payment system, strengthen oversight, and better align incentives with high-quality patient care."

We look forward to continuing to work with Congress and key stakeholders to pursue thoughtful, patient-centered improvements to the hospice benefit; ones that protect beneficiaries, reward high-quality providers, and ensure every Medicare dollar is spent wisely.

This Pride Month, NPHI celebrates our LGBTQ+ members, staff, patients, families, caregivers, volunteers, and communities whose lives and experiences strengthen the work we do every day.

The hospice movement has long stood alongside those facing serious illness with compassion and dignity. Did you know that in the early days of the AIDS crisis, when fear and stigma often left people isolated, hospice providers were among the first to step forward to provide care and human connection.

Hospice providers were there at the beginning of the AIDS crisis, caring for those whom others too often overlooked. And they will be there at the very end for everyone, ensuring every person is met with dignity, compassion, and love.

A Hospice News article highlights NPHI's comments on the proposed FY 2027 hospice payment rule, where we made clear that the proposed 2.4% payment increase falls short for nonprofit hospice providers who continue to operate on exceptionally narrow margins while caring for patients with complex medical and social needs.

Our recommendations focus on strengthening access to high-quality hospice care, improving transparency around non-hospice Medicare spending, supporting targeted program integrity efforts, advancing community-based palliative care, and ensuring policies reflect the realities providers face every day.

Read more:

The proposed 2.4% hospice payment rate increase is insufficient, and the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) should reconsider
