Working at the grassroots level, DRP provides the tools to its partner radio stations to help them create compelling radio programs, organize live debates and discussions, produce public service announcements and organize community events that have not only turned these stations into critical sources of information for their communities, but have become agents of change within their communities.

On World Press Freedom Day, Developing Radio Partners recognizes that press freedom is more urgent than ever. Around the world and here at home, access to trustworthy information is under threat - yet it remains essential for informed, resilient communities. Through community media, we train journalists how to create fact-based information - amplifying local voices, challenging misinformation, and keeping the public connected to the truth. A free press isn’t optional. It's the backbone of healthy, democratic societies.

I have some sad news to share. This morning, Kevin Klose passed away. Kevin served on DRP's board for many years and remained a steadfast supporter even as his health declined in recent years. He deeply believed in our mission to help build a free and independent press around the world.

Klose led NPR for a decade starting in 1998, a period of incredible growth for the public media network.

Developing Radio Partners honors International Women’s Day by celebrating the women journalists, producers, and community leaders who use radio to expand access to information, uplift local voices, and drive change in their communities. Today and every day, we commit to partnering with women and girl change makers so that their stories, leadership, and solutions are heard loud and clear on the airwaves and in the decisions that shape their lives.

Mercy Malikwa is a writer and researcher for DRP and finds daily inspiration in the youth storytellers that she assists with their radio programs. Mercy creates twice-monthly tip sheets that youth reporters use to help guide their stories. The tip sheets provide background on a specific health topic along with types of people to interview and possible questions to ask.

Let Mercy tell you about her work with young journalists in her own words!

DRP writer and researcher, Mercy Malikwa, describes how the youth she works with on developing radio story ideas inspire her.
