A competitive regional economy depends on a transportation system that is reliable, efficient, innovative and built for growth. Last week, we convened transportation industry leaders as part of our ongoing work to advance regional mobility and infrastructure priorities critical to long-term competitiveness.

With generous support from Waymo and WSP, Greater Washington on the Move brought leaders together to examine how DC, Baltimore and Richmond can accelerate delivery of major projects, strengthen multimodal connectivity and leverage emerging technologies—all essential to supporting talent attraction and retention, industry growth and long-term regional vitality.

Moderators Rolando Amaya, Senior Vice President; Mid-Atlantic Region Executive, WSP and Mugdha Tipnis Senior Vice President and Transportation Business Line Leader - Mid-Atlantic South, WSP, helped guide a discussion that surfaced immediate priorities for the business community and regional partners, including:

🔹Aligning infrastructure investment with growth-oriented, innovation-centered planning.
🔹Improving regional coordination and reducing procedural bottlenecks that slow progress.
🔹Building durable, sustainable transportation funding models.

As the Partnership continues this work, these insights will shape how we engage leaders, inform policy, and accelerate investments that support a more connected, competitive, and future-proof regional economy.

The region’s workforce continues to be a defining strength of the Baltimore-to-Richmond corridor, and healthcare is one of the fastest growing sectors.

MedStar Health and Howard Community College are launching the Registered Cardiovascular Technician Apprenticeship Program, offering full-time jobs, hands-on training and a nationally recognized certification without student debt.

The initiative reflects the increasing demand for skilled healthcare professionals and the region’s commitment to creating clear, accessible pathways into high-impact careers. Strengthening our healthcare workforce means stronger communities and a more resilient regional economy.

The Bezos Family’s latest commitment—$11.25M to support families experiencing homelessness across DC, Maryland and Virginia—reinforces how housing stability is a core regional priority with economic implications.

This year’s awards are a part of the Fund’s $102.5 million national commitment and will fund grants to expand shelter capacity, reach multigenerational households often overlooked by traditional programs and help more families move from crisis into stable, long-term housing.

Strategic investments of this scale strengthen the service infrastructure that supports families, reinforces workforce stability and are essential to the long-term competitiveness of the region.

Exelon CEO Calvin Butler offers timely perspective in the The New York Times on the accelerating power demand reshaping the grid—a topic with direct implications for the region. With the country’s largest concentration of data centers spanning Northern Virginia and continued growth across Maryland and DC, our region sits at the center of the national conversation about load growth, infrastructure and affordability.

Butler’s interview highlights what it will take to keep pace: modernizing the grid, balancing rapid expansion with community needs and ensuring customers remain protected as demand climbs.

The choices made now will shape the region’s business climate and the future of industry, technology, energy and infrastructure for decades to come.

What a powerful morning at our 8th annual Capital Region Transportation Forum. Co-hosted with the Greater Washington Board of Trade at The George Washington University, the Forum brought together leaders across DC, Maryland and Virginia to focus on one shared priority: a reliable, sustainably funded, future-ready transportation network that drives our region’s economic competitiveness.

One message was clear: our transportation future is inseparable from our economic future. When Metro is strong, our region is strong. As Randy Clarke and our DMVMoves panelists underscored, long-term, predictable capital funding—beginning in FY28—is essential to keeping Metro a world-class system and maintaining the mobility backbone that supports millions of riders and our regional economy.

We also heard from innovators at Waymo, StreetLight Data, Uber and the Eno Center for Transportation on how autonomous vehicles, real-time data and emerging technology will shape how people move and access opportunity across the corridor. Through our ongoing work with WMATA, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and as a DMVMoves Community Partners Advisory Group member, Greater Washington Partnership is helping align leaders, data and investment so our region acts as one—coordinated, competitive and future-focused.

Thank you to the leaders who helped shape today’s conversation—Kathy Hollinger and Jack McDougle—alongside Randy Clarke, Clark Mercer and Bryan Hill, and to Waymo, Amazon, Transurban, Uber, WSP and First National Bank for supporting this work. Their partnership strengthens our collective push for a more reliable, more connected and more competitive Capital Region.
