Deferred Retirement Option Program (D.R.O.P.) Legislation Scheduled for Vote

On Tuesday, October 20, at 12:00 pm, the DC Council will vote on Bill 26-0100 - the Deferred Retirement Option Program Amendment Act of 2025.

This is a major development in the years-long effort to get this type of program implemented into MPD. Both the DC Police Union and the IAFF have worked tirelessly to get to this point.

If you’re not familiar with the concept, DROP programs allow employees to trigger their retirement three years before they actually separate from the department. Their retirement annuity then begins paying out into a savings account. Once the member finally separates, they receive both the accumulated DROP funds and their ongoing pension benefits.

The legislation will require it to pass two votes by the Council. The first vote will be held this Tuesday. Your Union Leadership team will be present. If the bill passes both votes, it will then need to be signed by the Mayor.

We will update members as the bill progresses through the the legislative process.

Investigator Apolinar “Nuney” Nunez is undergoing treatment following a recent cancer diagnosis. The DC Police Union stands with him and his family during this difficult time.

Those who know Nuney know the kind of man he is: a devoted husband, the ultimate girl dad, a loyal friend, and a brother in blue. A dedicated member of the Metropolitan Police Department and a decorated Army combat veteran, he has spent much of his life serving others.

Nuney is always there when someone needs a hand. Now it is our turn to be there for him.

A GoFundMe has been established to help support his wife and five young daughters while he focuses on treatment. If you are able, please consider donating. Sharing the fundraiser is another meaningful way to help.

Let’s show the Nunez family that we have their backs, just as Nuney would have ours. Nobody in this Union fights alone

Sixty years ago today, on October 1, 1966, our Lodge received its charter. Today, the Jerrard F. Young DC FOP State Lodge proudly celebrates six decades of unity, service, and commitment!

We honor our founding members, remember those we have lost, and thank every member who has helped carry our Lodge’s proud legacy forward.

We look forward to celebrating together at our 60th Anniversary Dinner this Saturday, October 3!

Today, the DC Police Union remembers the 12 innocent lives lost in the Washington Navy Yard shooting on September 16, 2013. We keep their families, the survivors, and all those affected in our thoughts and prayers. We also honor the courage of the officers and first responders who answered the call that tragic day.
