Bayard Rustin organized the 1963 March on Washington.
He did it as an openly gay Black man, and for that audacity, he was pushed to the margins of the movement he helped build and of the history books that followed.
The March has a Forever Stamp. Dr. King, whom Rustin mentored, has a Forever Stamp. Yet, Rustin was left out.
The Bayard Rustin Stamp Act (H.R. 7441) would change that and give him the recognition he's owed.
👉 Call your representative and ask them to cosponsor H.R. 7441. Link to NBJC's Digital Action Hub is in bio.

"Let us hold fathers to the same standard we hold mothers to, and give them their flowers, too, when they are due."

On the latest clip from Teach the Babies, Dr. David J. Johns breaks down the hidden gender bias present in public discussions about family and school choices.
"Two parents made the decision. The blame landed on one," notes Dr. Johns.

"When we talk about school decisions as a mother's burden, we make them one. The fathers doing the work disappear from the story, and that can make it harder for the next father to see himself in any of it." It is time to recognize shared responsibility in our families and honor the Black fathers standing on the frontlines for their children's education.

"When we keep handing Black parents that choice, then blame them for whichever cost shows up, the problem is the design."

In the latest solo episode of Teach the Babies, Dr. David J. Johns explores the history and reality of educational choice in America, titled Who Designed The Choice. From criminalizing Black mothers who cross school district lines to post-Brown tuition grants that drained public education, Dr. Johns analyzes how policy architecture continues to place the burden of systemic failure onto Black families.

On the latest episode of Teach the Babies, Dr. Tiffany Crutcher provides a crucial update on her family's legal battle in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After successfully appealing a case dismissal in the 10th Circuit Court, a trial date has been set for February 8th. "This is what qualified immunity will do to a family," says Dr. Crutcher. "

So we gotta abolish qualified immunity. We gotta change the use of force standard." As we support the Crutcher family on their day in court, Dr. Crutcher urges us all to stay engaged, follow the case, and make our voices heard at the ballot box on November 3rd.

"If your why does not make you cry, it is not strong enough."

In this powerful episode of Teach the Babies, Dr. David J. Johns is joined by Dr. Tiffany Crutcher for an unforgettable discussion on faith, grief, and sustainable movement building. After her twin brother Terence Crutcher was killed by police in Tulsa, Dr. Crutcher dedicated her life to ensuring that his legacy would outlast the tragedy that took him. From unearthing deep-seated historical injustice in Tulsa to creating spaces of belonging and love for our youth, Dr. Crutcher’s leadership embodies what it means to lead with purpose.

"I am not calling these babies out. I am calling them in," says Dr. Crutcher. "I am bringing them in. I am creating space for them to feel like they belong, and that they are needed, and that they are loved."

"Documenting our history is an act of advocacy, equity, and liberation."

We are thrilled to share that In Defense of Ourselves has been named an Official Selection at the 2026 Baltimore International Black Film Festival.

Screening in the DMV Shorts category on Sunday, October 11, this documentary examines critical fights for pay equity, economic justice, and the defense of Black community wellbeing.

Join us in celebrating Black storytelling and documentary activism in the DMV.

In the summer of 2024, hundreds of advocates, artists, community leaders, and policymakers converged on Washington, D.C. for the first-ever Equity March. They moved through the halls of Congress by day and filled the ballroom by night—a deliberate, joyful, urgent declaration that equity is not a policy preference. It is the precondition for freedom. In Defense of Ourselves is ultimately a film about what it means to hold hope and urgency in the same hand. It asks: What does equity advocacy look like when the word ""equity"" has become a political target? When the ballroom that once spilled into Capitol Hill must now contend with a government that has declared the very premise of the march illegal?
