HIT Fact 3: Tutoring Improves Grades: Tutoring can lead to improved grades, higher test scores, and a greater chance of academic success beyond grade school. When students feel confiedent in the classroom, they are more likely to continue their learning experience.

As we continue to explore the ways that high impact tutoring positvely effects leaners, it is imperitive that we understand how tutoring support boosts confidence in students and encourages them to continue learning beyond grade school. By interacting with college tutors, students adapt a near peer tutor relationship that sparks curiosity concerning their future beyond their present circumstance.

HIT Fact 2: Tutoring Strengthens Skills: Through the structured practice of high impact tutoring, students develop better study habits, time management, and organizational skills, which helps them in independent learning, prepares them for tests, and life beyond the classroom. Structured learning breeds consistency and consistency strengthens a student’s skills both in the classroom and beyond.

As we conclude our series on the positive effects of high impact tutoring, we invite you to join us as we reach, teach, and inspire the next generation of leaders. Visit our website at www.raisingavillage.org and sign up to become a volunteer today!

As Raising A Village Foundation continues to support our learners in the classroom and beyond, we would like to share some of the positive ways that high impact tutoring (HIT) positively impacts students.

HIT Fact 1: Tutoring Improves Understanding: One-on-one sessions provide a personalized approach to clarify difficult concepts and bridge learning gaps. Students should not only learn the concept by site, but they should also understand the concept so it can be used as a building block to support future learning concepts.

The RAVF staff had a wonderful time connecting with American University students at the Part-Time Employment Fair this month! 💼✨

Our team shared information about Raising A Village Foundation’s Driven 2 Succeed program, which empowers students across D.C. through mentorship, tutoring, and academic enrichment.

“It was inspiring to meet so many young leaders who are eager to give back, strengthen their communities, and help the next generation succeed,” said RAVF Director of Communications and Outreach, Fatima King. “We’re grateful to AU for hosting such an impactful event and to every student who stopped by our table to learn how they can make a difference.”

If you missed us at the fair, there are still plenty of ways to get involved! Learn more about our available job opportunities and how you can join the Raising A Village team at www.raisingavillage.org/careers!

Together, we can build brighter futures for the next generation.

Tip #3: Goal-setting teaches students responsibility, confidence, and vision. As a parent, you can walk alongside them in setting goals that go beyond just academics.

Here’s how to help:
• Start with questions: Ask things like, “What is one thing you would like to improve in school?” or “What new experience do you want to have this year?”
• Encourage balance: Academic goals like finishing homework on time are great, but so are personal goals like making a new friend, joining a club, or practicing self-care.
• Check in & celebrate: Create regular times to talk about progress and celebrate small wins.

When parents show they value growth and effort, students feel motivated to keep going. You’re not just supporting schoolwork—you’re helping them shape who they are becoming.

Tip #2: The environment your student learns in shapes how well they can focus. As a parent, you can make a big difference by helping them carve out a dedicated study space. Try these tips:

• Choose a spot with good light and minimal distractions (a corner desk, kitchen table, or quiet shared space).
• Keep supplies like pencils/pens, notebooks, and laptop and charger readily available.
• Encourage a “no phones during homework” rule to reduce interruptions.

Having a consistent study area signals to your child’s brain: it’s time to focus. You don’t need a big budget or a private office—just a supportive environment where they can feel ready and equipped to learn.

Tip #1: As we enter another school year, we would like to offer tips to set your student up for success! One of the greatest tools you can give your student is consistency. A strong routine helps reduce stress, improve focus, and create stability. Here’s how you can foster an atmosphere of consistency for your learner:

Bedtime & wake-up times: Encourage a consistent sleep schedule so they are well rested and ready to start their day.

Homework block: Set aside a regular time each day for schoolwork. Be nearby for questions, but let them practice independently too.

Downtime matters: Remind them to take breaks, get outside, and recharge.

When students know what to expect, they feel more secure and prepared. Your guidance in building healthy habits now will set them up for success throughout the school year.

It was a beautiful, sunny day in June when RAVF staff members and volunteers from Deloitte Consulting Group came together for their annual Impact Day. The team worked alongside students from Kelly Miller Middle School to plant a community garden on the school’s campus. Everyone pitched in to plant tomatoes, strawberries, cucumbers, and various flowers and plants. The garden will also serve as an ongoing project for the students to continue as they were taught how to plant, water, and harvest fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden.

“We appreciate the hard work and efforts that were displayed here today,” stated Kelly Miller Connected Schools Manager Loren Robinson. “It is always exciting to see our students engaged in projects that introduce them to healthy eating options and alternative ways of learning. This is an experience that they will treasure for years to come.”
