Instituted by former University President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg in 1989, the scholarship program is designed to attract the best and brightest graduates of the District of Columbia's Public Schools to George Washington University. Inaugurated as the 21st Century Scholars, the scholarship program was renamed for President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg by the Univers

ity's Board of Trustees in 1999 to honor his decade of service to the University. The SJT Scholars Program was designed to seek out and contribute to the advancement of the best and brightest of D.C.'s youth by providing opportunities of academic advancement, professional development and community involvement.
