CHICAGO: Come see our film Severed on Saturday, April 18th at .

Severed tells the story of Mohamad Saleh, an 18-year-old from Gaza who has lived through five major assaults on the Gaza Strip. In those attacks, he lost his home, family members, his best friends, and, at the age of 12, his leg. Now living in exile in Egypt, Mohamad struggles to piece together the shattered fragments of his life. Through his eyes, the pain and trauma endured by thousands in Gaza are laid bare, alongside their remarkable strength, resilience, and determination to live.

Severed will be featured as part of the The Untold Intifada 1958 screening, from 3-5:30pm on Saturday, April 18th.  Film director and Donkeysaddle Projects founder Jen Marlowe will be at the screening in-person, as part of a discussion with the filmmakers following the screening. Get your tickets at the link in bio.

We hope you can make it to see Severed, as well as the other important films in the festival!

April’s read for the Abolitionist Futures Reading Circles is “The Dispossessed” by Ursula K Le Guin. If you’d like to join us, you can do so by visiting tinyurl.com/abolitionistfuture or following the link in our bio. Our global virtual discussion about this book will be Sunday, April 26th at 1pm EST.

Our Abolitionist Futures Reading Circles are a place to come together and read texts across genres to help us imagine the future we want to live in, and define what is required from us to get there. There are local circles, with monthly virtual transnational gatherings.

We currently have reading circles set up in Mexico City; Ramallah; Washington, DC; Baltimore; Seattle; San Diego; and Northwest Arkansas. If you don’t see your city on the list but would like to have a local space, you can be the point person in your own city!

Sign up to join a circle (or help start one locally) at tinyurl.com/abolitionistfuture or at the link in our bio.

On the last day of Women’s History Month, we honor A.

A. is an immigrant rights and reproductive justice community organizer, who survived 2+ years in ICE detention and 14+ years of ongoing deportation resistance.

A.’s work and activism centers community defense and care, and uplifting multifaceted narratives about black and brown people who the system has criminalized. She also practices somatics, with the understanding that trauma healing is part of the work of liberation.

A. has been an organizer with the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice and Mijente among many other orgs, and a storyteller with We Testify, where she’s shared her abortion story as an act of resistance and liberation.

She is currently developing an immersive performance piece called Yo Te Esperaba with Donkeysaddle, highlighting her family’s struggle to stay together and her journey of releasing the shame and fear that is inflicted by the system.

A.’s partner was recently detained by ICE, and although he is now home with their baby, they are still fighting his own immigration proceedings. If you wish to donate towards his legal fees, the link is in the bio.

Thank you A., for your tireless spirit, fiercely standing for your community and so many others.

This Women’s History Month, we honor Azza Qassem Alkifarna.

Azza was born and raised in Beit Hanoun, Gaza. She was a staunch freedom fighter and feminist who rejected the Westernized feminism offered through Gaza’s NGOs, while insisting that the struggle for Palestinian and women’s liberation are inextricably intertwined.

She was outspoken about the stagnancy of the Palestinian Authority, as well as the lack of transparency in many of Gaza’s NGOs. She raised her children as a single mother in a patriarchal society, all while battling cancer.

Azza’s journey as an organizer and freedom fighter is one of legend. In the 1980s she co-founded several women’s resistance committees; Israel subsequently placed her under house arrest in 1987.

Through the 90s and early 2000s, Azza helped shape laws that equalized inheritance for women and men, raised the age of marriage for girls, and outlawed polygamy. Much of this work was done through the Palestinian Model Parliament, which she helped found in 1991.

In 2006, the Israeli army demolished her house in Beit Hanoun and arrested her sons, who were just 14 and 12 at the time. The army demolished her home again in 2014. Her response to this is portrayed in the short film that Donkeysaddle made with her, Just Before Dawn.

In 2021, Azza passed from COVID-19.

She never compromised her moral clarity or her expansive vision of true liberation. She spoke out directly, from the heart, without fear of consequences.

Rest in Power, Ancestor Azza.

If you’d like to watch the film that features Azza, you can find it at donkeysaddle.org/remembering-the-gaza-war.

This Women’s History Month, we honor Martina Davis-Correia. Martina was a fierce human rights activist from Savannah, GA, leading the charge for her brother Troy Davis’s freedom from Georgia’s death row.

She co-authored I Am Troy Davis, worked to end the death penalty in partnership with dozens of orgs (taking a leadership role in many of them), and advocated for women with breast cancer—all while fighting to free her brother, raise her son, and battle her own breast cancer diagnosis.

Martina worked on education initiatives on cancer and cancer prevention. She was active with the National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer and advocated for creating mobile mammography vans for underserved women in Savannah.

Martina passed in December 2011, just 2 months after her brother Troy Davis’s murder by the state of Georgia. Martina’s words shook worlds and her advocacy mobilized millions.

Rest in Power, Ancestor Martina.
