MOBILIZING:
Shoulder to Shoulder mobilizes faith voices in the public square through advocacy and media efforts on anti-Muslim discrimination
HISTORY:
On September 7, 2010, approximately 40 senior religious leaders convened at the National Press Club in Washington, DC for an emergency interfaith summit to promote tolerance and combat the recent increase in anti-Muslim rhetoric, hate crimes, and Islamophobia. They produced a powerful joint statement against anti-Muslim bigotry and held a press conference that was broadcast live by C-SPAN and CNN, covered by multiple national and international media outlets, and attended by White House staff. As a result of the success of this summit and the continued need for efforts to end anti-Muslim bigotry, they formed a new, one-year campaign, called, “Shoulder-to-Shoulder: Standing with American Muslims; Upholding American Values.” Those organizations that played a key role in that summit, and others, are represented in the Steering Committee of Shoulder-to-Shoulder.
