In DC, over 90% of people in jail are Black and Latino and we’re harmed most by solitary confinement. It doesn’t help. People come home with that pain, and our communities feel it.

Right now in DC, most people in jail, over 90%, are Black and Latino. And we are the ones hurt the most by solitary confinement.

Let’s be honest, solitary doesn’t help people. It harms them.

Even a few days alone can cause stress, sadness, and long-term pain. Almost half of jail suicides happen in isolation.

When people come home, they bring that pain with them. That affects all of us.

This doesn’t make our neighborhoods safer. It makes things worse.

Bill 26-0028, the ERASE Solitary Confinement Act is about ending this and doing things the right way focused on real support, real rehabilitation, and basic human dignity.
